Pair of Late Goals Result in Worcester State’s 3-1 Loss to UMass Dartmouth

WORCESTER, Mass. – After tie score late in the third period, UMass Dartmouth’s Casey Shea (Woburn, Mass.) and Mike Sones (Waterdown, Ont.) scored a pair of goals in the last minute of play to succeed 3-1 over the Worcester State University Lancers in a Sunday evening Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) men’s ice hockey game inside the Hart Recreation Center on the campus of Holy Cross.

WORCESTER, Mass. – After tie score late in the third period, UMass Dartmouth's Casey Shea (Woburn, Mass.) and Mike Sones (Waterdown, Ont.) scored a pair of goals in the last minute of play to succeed 3-1 over the Worcester State University Lancers in a Sunday evening Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) men's ice hockey game inside the Hart Recreation Center on the campus of Holy Cross.

Despite being outshot by UMass Dartmouth in the first period (13-9), Worcester State earned the first lead of the game when Jim LeNoir (Exton, Pa.) and Mitchell Purdie (Cavan, Ont.) setup newcomer Ryan Flynn (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) for his first goal in a Lancer uniform. On the Lancers' sole power play opportunity of the game, LeNoir passed the puck to Purdie from the left who then setup Flynn for a shot on the right side.

Following a scoreless second period, the Corsairs knotted the game at 1-1 early in the third to make the game a thriller. The majority of the third period was played in UMass Dartmouth's offensive zone as they fired off 15 shots on goal.

It wasn't until the last minute of play that Shea would capitalize on assists from Connor Court (Swansea, Ill.) and Mike Kelly (Stoneham, Mass.). Shea was to the right of the goal and snuck the puck around the feet of Worcester's goaltender, Josh Reinstein (Woodland Hills, Calif.) for the 2-1 go-ahead. The Lancers needed an offensive threat to stay in the game, and pulled the goalie for the extra man on the ice. However, UMass Dartmouth's Matt Baldino (Woburn, Mass.) got a hold of the puck and passed ahead to Sones who sealed the 3-1 victory for the Corsairs.

UMass Dartmouth's netminder, Drew Michaels (Newton, Mass.), picked up the win, registering 26 saves on the evening. The Lancers' freshman goaltender, Reinstein suffered his second loss of the season in a 30-save performance.

Worcester State (3-7-3, 1-4-2 MASCAC) resumes play on Thursday (Jan. 12) when they travel to Framingham State before returning home on Saturday (Jan. 14) to host Fitchburg State. UMass Dartmouth (8-4-0, 5-2-0 MASCAC) hits the road again on Thursday when they travel to Plymouth State before returning home on Saturday to host Westfield State.
