How it Happened:
It would be a hard fought first period for the Lancers as they took on the AMCATs in their first WooCup Championship game. After beating Assumption on Friday night in an overtime, the Lancers were primed to take the fight to Anna Maria in a non-conference meeting. It would take a majority of the first period before a team found the back of the net, and the lucky team was Worcester with sophomore Bruce Grandbois (Windsor, Ontario) redirecting a shot from senior Anders Gronstad (Royal Oak, MI) and first year Sean Tyrie (East Quigley, NY), who capitalized on a power play opportunity. Worcester would take the 1-0 lead into the first intermission before adding to their lead in the second off an unassisted pick up from junior Christian Howanitz (Colorado Spring, CO). Anna Maria would find a goal back after killing a major penalty hoping to grab momentum but even with a final period power play in the AMCATs favor had Worcester holding the 2-1 lead.
The third period was a full Worcester State show as they would take on two more goals before the final buzzer. Howanitz would add a second goal of the game for the Lancers halfway through the final period of action and the icing on the cake would come from Grandbois who also put in his second goal with an assist from Tyrie for the 4-1 lead and eventual win for Worcester.
Junior Donovan Alfama would claim MVP honors of the tournament for his standout performance over the two games, and his 38 save performance in the Championship game.
What's Next:
Worcester State (2-0, 0-0) will be back on their home ice next Thursday as they host Salem State in their conference opener at 7:10pm
