Lancers Shine at Bonnie Edmondson Classic
Worcester, MA- The Worcester State women's track and field team delivered an impressive performance Friday at Eastern Connecticut State, collecting top-ten finishes across nearly every discipline at the Bonnie Edmondson Invitational.
Worcester, MA- The Worcester State women's track and field team delivered an impressive performance Friday at Eastern Connecticut State, collecting top-ten finishes across nearly every discipline at the Bonnie Edmondson Classic.
The Lancers were at their best in the relay events, finishing second in the 4x100m with a time of 51.33. The unit featured sophomore Emily Bodwell (Lakeville, MA), sophomore Arianna Farrell (Wilmington, MA), first-year Ayla McGrail (Charlton, MA), junior Alexis Strong (Southington, CT), and first-year Peyton Watkins (Salisbury, MA). The B squad in the 4x400m came home third overall with a time of 4:35.03, anchored by senior Leah Berg (Worcester, MA) and senior Bridget O'Malley (Leominster, MA), while the A squad added a fourth-place finish at 4:53.30, led by sophomore Samantha Edwards (East Longmeadow, MA) and first-year Makenna Perro (Brookfield, MA).
Distance running was a bright spot for the Lancers. First-year Anna Serafini (Leominster, MA) earned runner-up honors in the 1,500m with a time of 5:12.71, while senior Leah Berg finished third at 5:20.55 and sophomore Samantha Edwards was close behind in fourth at 5:22.07. Senior Erin Condon (East Bridgewater, MA) also competed, finishing 12th at 6:28.24. In the 800m, first-year Caydence Carr (Upton, MA) turned in a strong third-place effort at 2:33.49, with first-year Lauren Flanagan (Milford, MA) contributing a 10th-place finish at 2:56.72.
The sprints saw solid contributions across the board. Junior Alexis Strong put together one of the top individual sprint performances of the day, placing seventh in the 200m at 27.38. First-year Peyton Watkins was consistent in the short sprints, finishing ninth in the 100m (13.79) and 14th in the 200m (29.55). First-year Ayla McGrail was right with her, taking 10th in the 100m at 13.80. Junior Meghan Driscoll (Mansfield, MA) placed 11th in the 100m (14.04) and 15th in the 200m (29.59), while first-year Leah Bordenca (Westford, MA) rounded out the group with finishes of 17th in the 200m (29.79). In the 400m, senior Bridget O'Malley posted an eighth-place finish at 64.96, and first-year Janine Betcher (Fontana, CA) was close behind in sixth at 62.44. First-year Makenna Perro added a 10th-place 400m at 67.49.
In the hurdles, first-year Lilah Delongchamp (Worcester, MA) placed fourth in the 400m hurdles with a time of 74.64. Sophomore Arianna Farrell turned in a fifth-place finish in the 100m hurdles at 18.03, with first-year Rebecca Gardner (Killingly, CT) adding a seventh-place effort at 18.56.
In the throws, first-year Jenna Lopez (West Springfield, MA) had a standout day in the shot put, claiming second place with a throw of 11.40m. Senior Ava Piccolo (Tewksbury, MA) was one of the Lancers' most versatile contributors, finishing third in the javelin (25.87m), seventh in the shot put (9.89m), and seventh in the hammer (37.56m). Junior Morgan Merrell (Leicester, MA) posted an eighth-place hammer throw at 37.42m, and sophomore Charlotte Collins (Weymouth, MA) rounded out the group with a 10th-place shot put (8.27m) and 12th-place hammer (33.82m). Sophomore Angela Crognalo-Torrez (Walpole, MA) contributed with an 11th-place shot put (8.25m) and a fourth-place javelin at 24.48m. Perro added a sixth-place javelin effort at 24.32m, while senior Zoe Callahan (Arlington, MA) competed in both the javelin (13th, 16.22m) and the shot put.
In the field events, junior Alexis Strong picked up a third-place long jump at 5.29m, and sophomore Bodwell added a fourth-place triple jump finish at 9.91m. Bodwell also placed 10th in the long jump at 4.37m, with junior Lauren Condike (East Longmeadow, MA) finishing 11th at 4.24m. In the pole vault, first-year Gabriella Fischel (Westport, CT) placed seventh at 2.50m and Watkins added an eighth-place vault at 2.05m.
The Lancers are back in Championship action as they head to Fitchburg State next Saturday for the MASCAC Championship
