Betcher and Lopez Claim Top Spots at MASCAC Indoor Championship
Worcester, MA- The Worcester State University women’s indoor track & field team delivered a strong showing at the MASCAC Indoor Track and Field Championship, hosted by Westfield State University at Wheaton College, earning a strong third-place finish with 118 points. Fueled by personal records, season bests, and podium finishes across the board, the Lancers showcased their depth and competitive fire on the conference stage.

Fueled by personal records, season bests, and podium finishes across the board, the Lancers showcased their depth and competitive fire on the conference stage.
Junior Alexis Strong (Southington, CT) led the charge in the 60m, qualifying sixth in 8.22 before improving to fourth in the finals at 8.23. She also added a seventh-place finish in the 200m with a season-best 27.74 and placed fourth in the long jump (5.05m), compiling valuable team points in multiple events.
In the 200m, sophomore Emily Bodwell (Lakeville, MA) sprinted to ninth in a season-best 28.74, while first year's Leah Bordenca (Westford, MA), Ayla McGrail (Charlton, MA) (17th), and Peyton Watkins(Salisbury, MA) claimed 15th, 17th and 18th respectively, adding additional depth to the competition. Junior Meghan Driscoll, (Mansfield, MA) clocked a season-best 30.61.
The 60m hurdles saw a strong finals presence from sophomore Arianna Farrell (Wilmington, MA), who placed sixth in 10.86 after qualifying at 11.19. First year Rebecca Gardner (Killingly, CT) impressed with a personal-record 11.18 in the finals to take seventh.
The 600m proved golden for the Lancers as first year Janine Betcher (Fontana, CA) captured the conference title in a personal-record 1:45.14, while senior Bridget O'Malley (Leominster, MA) surged to third in a PR 1:48.46, igniting the Lancer momentum.
In the 1,000m, first year Caydence Carr (Upton, MA) raced to a runner-up finish in a personal-record 3:23.87 while senior Claudia Symonick (Auburn, MA) placed sixth with a personal record of 3:33.49. First year Abby Matta (West Bridgewater, MA) would claim a personal record of her own with a 3:50.57, and a seventh place finish..
The distance crew continued to shine as first year Anna Serafini (Leominster, MA) placed fifth in the 3,000m with a personal-record 11:20.21, while sophomore Samantha Edwards (East Longmeadow, MA) earned points in the 800m with her sixth place finish while also claiming seventh in the 5,000m with a personal record of 20:19.00. Senior Leah Berg (Worcester, MA) contributed a fifth-place finish in the mile for some additional quality points to the meet.
The Lancers' relays delivered clutch performances. The 4x200m quartet of Bodwell, Bordenca, Watkins, and Farrell secured third in 2:03.09.
In the 4x400m, Betcher, O'Malley, first year Tamara Ayala-Garcia (Lawrence, MA), and junior Mia Guinto (West Boylston, MA) combined for another third-place finish in a time of 4:33.03, highlighting Worcester State's balanced strength.
The 4x800m team of Berg, Carr, Serafini, and Symonick surged to a runner-up finish in 11:05.82, closing the meet with determination and poise.
The throws group delivered some of the meet's biggest moments. First year Jenna Lopez (West Springfield, MA) claimed the conference crown in the shot put with an 11.00m mark, while junior Jadah Stokes (Chicopee, MA) followed closely in second with a distance of 10.45m. Senior Ava Piccolo (Tewksbury, MA) added a season-best 9.53m for fifth.
In the weight throw, Piccolo soared to second with an 11.89m and Stokes earned third with an 11.62m, while sophomore Charlotte Collins (Weymouth, MA) recorded a personal-record 11.15m for fourth. Junior Morgan Merrell (Leicester, MA) contributed valuable points in the weight..
In the jumps, first year Gabriella Fischel (Westport, CT) vaulted to third in the pole vault with a height of 2.25m, while Bodwell added a third-place finish in the triple jump with a measurement of 9.82m. Betcher and Strong would tie for fourth on the 9.52m leap in an exciting battle in the pit.
Worcester State is back in action next Saturday at Wheaton for the Pre-Post Invitational as they look for their last marks for NCAA competition.
