Rams Slip Past Lancers in Second Half

Worcester, MA- After a strong showing both in and out of conference, the Worcester State Women's Soccer team (5-1-1, 3-0) take a step away from their conference competition to host Suffolk University in a midweek grit match. Last year the lancers dropped the meeting with Suffolk 1-0 and are looking for vengeance this year on their home turf.

How it Happened:

The battle between Worcester and Suffolk would be a complete team battle with each team getting chances to make a big impact in the game.The defense for each team started strong and was matched with equal intensity from their midfield and attack which culminated in success for the Lancers just 12 minutes into the game as they were awarded a corner off a hustle play. Junior Olivia Magierowski (Brimfield, MA) would connect for a deep corner that would force the keeper to attempt to break up the cross but an unlucky bounce would find the ball fall to junior Julianne Earnest's (Columbia, CT) foot for a quick dip to the left of the cage for the opening goal of the action. Each team would spend the remainder of the half looking to slip another shot past the keeper on the slick and rainy night, but the defense was ny on impenetrable leading to a 1-0 halftime score. Junior Ella Gumienny (Douglas, MA) would claim 5 saves in the first half of action while the Lancers would place four shots on frame. 

Early in the second half the Lancers nearly doubled their lead with a free kick into the box that hit off the keeper's hand, post and knocked off a Lancer foot all before being wrapped up by Suffolk. This was the tone of the second half with near misses and barely off shots as the field got slicker. While Worcester struggled to find the scoring luck Suffolk would nab two goals, one of a corner to a perfectly placed header and another swift cross at the top of the box that would see the claim the 2-1 lead. The intensity would only continue to rise as Worcester looked for the equalizer, but the shops would just not drop for the Lancers who fell 2-1to the Rams.

The Blue and Gold (5-2-1, 3-0) have just a day break before they return to conference action with a Friday night meeting at MCLA with a 6pm pass back.
