How it Happened:
A Beautiful late summer night in Worcester started out energetic, with the Lyons creating an instant free throw and some ball possession in their final third. The Lancers instantly retaliated with a swift attack that led to a half chance by Worcester striker number 13, junior Ava Lemenski (Clinton, MA). In the 3rd minute, Worcester State opened the game and scored an early goal to stun the Lyons as junior Olivia Magierowski (Brimfield, MA) received a leading pass down the left sideline from junior Samantha Sharp (Peabody, MA) and sent it down the endline for the first scoring action. An unlucky foul hindered Lemenski from putting a second goal in the back of the net, not even 5 minutes after the first goal was scored. In minute 12, Magierowski had a great shot on net that gave them another early chance in the game, establishing early dominance but it was denied its chance in the netting. In the 21st minute the Lyons looked to have the equalizer, but the call was overturned due to an offside position. This has added a little bit more tension and energy to an already balanced but energetic game. Later on in the first half, Lancers goalkeeper junior Ella Gumienny (Douglas, MA) was forced to show off her concentration and composure, stepping off her line and collecting the ball, due to a spell of attacks by the Wheaton Lyons. In the last few minutes, the Lancers were once again on the front foot and put tremendous pressure onto the defensive end of the Lyons. Highlight of this late spurt of energy was a beautiful shot by junior Amanda Cosco (Watertown, MA) from on top of the box, almost placing it top bins but the Lyons keeper made a nice save to keep a single goal differential.
The second half started with as much energy as the previous one ended with. Instant attacks by both teams were seen and Lyons capitalized with an early shot, saved by Gumienny, followed by more back and forth from both teams. 7 minutes in, the Lyons keeper got caught off her line and got punished by Magierowski, scoring an absolute beauty from 25-30 yards out, assisted by junior Emma Jacob (Billerica, MA). Towards the back half of the 2nd half, the Lancers took more control, showing more confidence and energy. The Wheaton Lyons threw everything they had at the Lancers, however, the Lancers' defensive performance in this game, led by junior captain Jessica Forbes (Clinton, MA) and junior Julianne Ernest (Columbia, CT). The last minutes showed real intensity and spirit by the Wheaton Lyons, however, a stronger and more consistent looking Worcester side, got it done tonight, with a final score of 2-0.
Gumienny would wrap up the game with six saves and a strong presence in the back field on the night
