Final
Worcester State: 45
WPI: 54
How it Happened:
The Engineers would find the first baskets of the game as they jumped out to slight 3-o advantage but junior Alana Smith (Chicopee, MA) would get the action started for Worcester off an assist from fellow junior Lena Waldron (Quincy, MA) in the Lancers season opener. The opening quarter would see the two teams trading points back and forth, with Worcester taking a lead with three minutes to go off a Waldron layup of a perfect pass from senior Mia Haynes (Worcester, MA). The Engineers would manage to reclaim the lead by the close of the quarter for a 13-11 lead.
The second quarter would find more of the same as WPI would look to extend their lead, but Worcester were hot in their heels over the full 10 minutes. First year Lena Malymina (Franklin, MA) would put Worcester back in the lead with just 25 seconds to go with a quick shot three from Waldron for the 26-25 halftime score.
Worcester would aim to maintain their control in the third but WPI would go on a mid quarter run pushing their lead to 15 over the course of the quarter. Worcester would work to chip away at the distance as the game moved into the fourth but were unable to get ahead of the Engineer surge, falling 54-45.
Waldron would lead the Lancers with 12 points, while Haynes would grab eight rebounds in the action
