How it Happened:
The Worcester State Men's Soccer team showed resilience and determination in their MASCAC matchup against Westfield State on Saturday, rallying late in an offensive surge but ultimately falling 6-4 to the Owls.
The game opened with both teams trading early possession as they tested each other's defenses. However, just five minutes in, the Lancers were caught off guard on the flank, leading to an early Westfield goal. Despite efforts from junior Dylan Verby (South Setauket, NY) to generate scoring chances, the Owls capitalized again on a counterattack to double their lead.
The first half continued to challenge Worcester, as defensive lapses allowed Westfield to add two more goals, sending the Lancers into halftime down 4-0.
After the break, Westfield continued their momentum, netting two quick goals to make it 6-0. But rather than fold, the Lancers dug deep and fought back. In the 31st minute, Verby, first year Alexander Lopez (Central Falls, RI), and sophomore Jacob Barcelos (East Providence, RI) combined beautifully, with Barcelos finishing to get Worcester on the board. The Blue and Gold continued to press, and minutes later, sophomore Ciledson Segundo (Norwood, MA) broke through the Owls' defense to tally the Lancers' second of the day.
With renewed energy, Worcester pushed the tempo, refusing to go quietly. In the closing minutes, a strong run by Verby led to a pinpoint cross that found senior Jamal Mohamud (Worcester, MA), who delivered a stunning header into the top corner to make it 6-4.
Despite the late surge, time ran out on Worcester's comeback bid. The Lancers showed heart and offensive firepower in the second half, outscoring the Owls 4-2 after halftime and proving their ability to rally under pressure.
Worcester State will look to carry that second-half momentum into their next conference matchup as they continue to battle in MASCAC play.
