How it Happened:
The Worcester State volleyball team showed grit and determination in its matchup with WPI on Thursday night, pushing the Engineers in stretches before falling in straight sets (25–19, 25–11, 25–12).
The opening set saw Worcester come out strong, trading points with the Engineers and even taking an early lead off a WPI miscue. Sophomore Katherine Crateau (North Andover, MA) sparked the Lancers with a strong service run that pushed Worcester in front by three. The Lancers continued to battle, forcing multiple lead changes before WPI held off a late surge to take the set 25–19.
WPI carried momentum into the second frame, but Worcester kept working to close the gap, spreading the ball across the court and forcing the Engineers into longer rallies. Despite the deficit, the Lancers showed composure under pressure and continued to battle defensively.
In the third set, Worcester responded with renewed energy. First-year Reece Connors (Fresno, CA) made her presence felt with strong swings and steady play at the net, helping the Lancers stay within striking distance. Worcester fought to the end, keeping the pressure on before WPI closed out the match 25–12.
What's Next:
The Lancers (1-10, 0-0) head east to Boston on Saturday to square off in a tri-match at Suffolk University that will also see them take on RIC. Action is scheduled to start at 1pm.
