WORCESTER, Mass. - The Worcester State University women's volleyball team fell short in Wednesday night's Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference matchup, losing 3-0 to the MCLA Trailblazers. Set scores were 25-23, 25-23, 25-12.
With the loss, Worcester State drops to 7-16 on the season and 3-3 in the MASCAC while MCLA improves to 16-8 and 4-2 in the league.
The Lancers found themselves in an early deficit in set one, down 10-5 to MCLA. Worcester State was able to fight back and tie the set up at 10-10. From then on, MCLA was able to maintain a slight lead eventually winning the set 25-23. MCLA's Reagan Scattergood (Rhinebeck, N.Y.) led the Trailblazers with seven kills, and was helped by Ahna Schlaefer (Lee, Mass.) who had five digs. Natalie Gillis (Ashland, Mass.) led the Lancers with five kills and six digs.
Worcester State came out strong at the start of set two putting up an early 7-2 lead. However, the visiting Trailblazers battled back and were able to tie the game up 12-12 halfway through the set. From there, MCLA would take the lead and never give it back to win the set 25-23. Four different Trailblazers paved the way with three kills, led by freshman Kelly Moczulski (New River, Ariz.) who also recorded seven digs. Gillis once again led the Lancers with five kills and six digs.
In set three the Trailblazers looked to finish the match quickly, and put up a commanding 15-4 lead. The Lancers tried to fight back but eventually fell short to drop set three 25-12.
Gillis finished as the match leader with 13 kills and 14 digs with five kills in both the first and second set.
Scattergood led the Trailblazers with 10 kills, seven of them coming in the first set.
The Lancers will return to action on Saturday at 1 p.m. for a non-conference matchup at Clark University. MCLA will return to the court on Saturday vs. Castleton at Plymouth State University.
