Final
Worcester State: 1
Fitchburg State: 0
How it Happened:
The MASCAC opener between Worcester State and Fitchburg State was a tight battle from start to finish, with both teams searching for the breakthrough goal. The Lancers controlled much of the first-half action, firing 18 shots toward goal, but the Falcons stood tall with seven saves to keep the match scoreless at halftime.
The pressure continued into the second half as Worcester pressed forward, only to be turned away by Fitchburg's defense. The breakthrough finally came in the 75th minute, when junior Emma Jacob (Billerica, MA) buried a pass from senior Ella Tatarczuk (Bedford, MA) for the lone goal of the day. Worcester pushed to extend its lead, but both defenses locked in over the final stretch, sealing a hard-fought 1-0 Lancers victory.
Junior goalkeeper Ella Gumienny (Douglas, MA) finished with three saves, earning her second shutout of the season.
What's Next:
The Blue and Gold (3-0, 1-0) get a week of rest before they return to action on September 13th in their conference home opener against Framingham State at 12pm. Next Saturday's game will also be played in honor of Men's Ice Hockey Student Athlete Evan Armit, who passed away on August 24th after a battle with cancer. The team will be wearing black arm bands and collection donations for the Armit's Go Fund Me Page.
