Worcester, MA- After starting their season this past Thursday, the Worcester State Women's Lacrosse team (1-0, 0-0) was right back in action on Saturday as they headed to Maine to take on the Wolves of Southern Maine in their second game of the fresh 2026 season.
Final
Worcester State: 9
Southern Maine: 12
How it Happened:
The Blue and Gold looked to begin their season 2-0 and would get the fireworks started early with junior Madigan Kelly (Bourne, MA), who would fire one into the Huskies net on a free position shot 47 seconds into the game to give the Lancers the early lead. Southern Maine would find two goals following Kelly's free position score but Worcester would regroup and have solid control defensively with sophomore Cadence Oleniak (Hampton, NH) getting some big saves early on in the contest to counter the Huskies offensive attack. After getting a yellow card early on in the quarter junior Shannon Donahue (Dennis, MA) would find the net and get her first goal of the season tying the score 2-2. Oleniak would have three saves during the first quarter but the Huskies would find the net with one second left in the quarter to lead 3-2.
The second quarter would see Southern Maine extend their lead 4-2 1:26 into the second quarter, but the Blue and Gold would find an answer quickly. At just a 1:14 later, and after a strong offensive attack by the Blue and Gold, junior Meghan Bowen (Westfield, MA), would fire her 4th goal of the season cutting the Huskies lead to one. The fireworks would continue offensively as senior Mckayla Fisher (Peabody, MA) would tie the score 4-4 with first year Meghan Heffernan (Westminster, MA) snagging the assist. Southern Maine would regain momentum late in the first half snagging two goals, finding the Blue and Gold trailing 6-4 at the half.
The beginning of the third quarter would be a back and forth battle between the two programs. Kelly would fire her second goal of the game with Fisher snagging an assist and her second point of the contest, but the momentum would flip quickly as a minute later the Huskies would answer, extending their lead back to two. Senior Molly Witkowski (Greenville, NY), would put her name in the goal column snagging her fifth goal of the season, cutting the lead back to just a single score. The Blue and Gold, trying to tie the game, would meet with success courtesy of first year Fallon Lozano (Upton, MA), getting her third goal of the season as Witkowski snagged another point with the assist to put the score at 7-7 going into the final quarter.
It would be a slower start in the final quarter of regulation as each team hoped to find success on both ends of the field to claim the victory. The Huskies would get to the back of the net first two and half minutes in, and add a cushion goal two minutes later, to jump out to a 9-7 lead. The Blue and Gold would try to find momentum on the offensive attack but the Huskies defense had different plans in the fourth. Southern Maine would capitalize off the Lancers mistakes and would fire two more goals late in the quarter to extend their lead to four. Fisher and Kelly would find the net again as the Lancers would try to rally a late quarter comeback but a final minute goal by the Huskies would seal the game, putting the Lancers away 12-9.
Kelly and Fisher would command the offensive attack as Kelly would have a hat-trick and Fisher would record two goals. Oleniak anchored the defensive unit with five saves in the contest.
