Gendron records 100th Point in Tight Battle versus Huskies

Worcester, MA - The Lancers (2-3) returned to action Friday evening at John F. Coughlin field for a non-conference game to take on the Southern Maine Huskies (2-5) in a game played in support of the One Love Foundation which focuses on creating a world of healthier relationships. There was a lap walked on the track at halftime to raise funds for the non-profit. More information can be found on their website https://www.joinonelove.org/. 

FINAL SCORE: Worcester St 10, Southern ME 11

The Lancers started off slow to start the game as the Huskies scored five goals in the first quarter to take charge of the game. Graduate student Rachel Shanks (Naples, ME) led the charge for the Huskies in the first three goals, two of those back to back to close out the first. There was not much offense on display for Worcester even though they outshot the Huskies 9-7. 

The second period was a different game for the Lancers as they came firing on all cylinders. They rallied to tie the game after being down four while scoring four unanswered of their own. Senior Shea Jarvis (Auburn, MA) scored three goals in the second while adding an assist to her game stats. Graduate student Claire Conway (Billerica, MA) and senior Emily Pavoni (Granby, MA) added to the scoring to help bring the Lancers back into the game. The first half ended with a score of 6-5 with the Huskies just barely holding on to the lead.

HALFTIME: Southern ME 6, Worcester St. 5

After the halftime intermission, sophomore Ashley Hurley (Feeding Hills, MA) and two goals by first year Mckayla Fisher (Peabody, MA) opened up the floodgates to give the Lancers an 8-6 lead within the first five minutes of the quarter. The second goal from Fisher came assisted by senior Lily Gendron (Lakeville, MA) which gave her a special milestone of 100 career points in her career at Worcester St. Shanks would add a goal for her fourth to tie the game at 8-8 to end the third quarter.   

Shanks would continue her game dominance with two goals within the first minutes to bring her to a total of six of her team's ten total goals. Fisher would match Shanks with her own dominance by scoring her third to tie the game 10-10 with 8:09 left in the game. Junior Paige Rinaldi (Freeport, ME) would break the tie 11-10 Huskies with 3:39 left in the game. The Lancers would make a strong last push causing a turnover to regain position with 44 seconds left in the game but they could not capitalize to tie the game. 

It was a great effort by the Lancers to crawl their way back into the game after going down by four early. They fought their way back to eventually take control but with their slow start, they were not able to make up for the lost time. Worcester would end up outshooting their opponent 38-24. The Lancers now sit at (2-4) while Southern Maine improves to (3-5). The Lancer's next game will be at home against Wheaton College on March 29th at 5:00 PM.
