Women's Lacrosse Falls To Rhode Island College, 15-11

Worcester, MA --- Junior Nicky Drolet (Somersworth, NH) registered four goals and an assist while classmate Molly Voyer (Lincoln, RI) added a hat-trick to help lead Rhode Island College to a 15-11 non-conference win over Worcester State this evening in women's lacrosse action at Coughlin Field.

For the Anchorwomen (2-0) senior Suany Almonte (Warwick, RI), sophomore Courtney McKiernan (Hope, RI) and freshman Ashley Signoriello (Cranston, RI) all recorded two goals apiece while McKeirman scooped up a game-best seven ground balls. Junior Jenna Childs (Cranston, RI) and sophomore Haley Lattinville (N. Kingstown, RI) and (Cranston, RI) each notched four ground balls apiece as they both forced a pair of miscues.

First-year Shawna Strazzere (Billerica, MA) propelled the effort for the Lancers (0-2) as she finished with four markers and one helper for five points while senior Carley MacIntyre (Townsend, MA) chipped with three. Junior Megan Sheehan (Dunstable, MA) also recorded two goals as junior Danielle Clifford (Attleboro, MA) added team-highs of four ground balls and two caused turnovers.

The Blue and Gold also received a lift from third-year keeper Haley Erickson (Saugus, MA) who stopped 12 of the 27 shots she saw on net. Erickson ended the night with three ground balls.

After Strazzere and senior Colleen Manning (Plainville, MA) put WSU up 2-0 early on in the contest, the game was back and forth throughout the duration of the period as there were seven ties and four lead changes until Rhode Island College grabbed the 9-8 edge at the intermission. Almonte and Childs netted the last two goals for the Anchorwomen in the opening frame.

Coming out of the locker room, Voyer tallied two of RIC's three goals as they took over a 12-8 advantage three minutes into the stanza. But Sheehan would help the Lancers erase a scoring drought of nearly 15 minutes with two straight markers to make the score 12-10 with 13:22 remaining.

The Anchorwomen would then make the most of their possessions as the visitors would score twice for the 14-10 lead with 6:24 left in regulation. Worcester State did get within a goal on a MacIntyre free-position goal at the 3:43 mark (14-11), but RIC kept it on the offensive side of the turf for the remainder of the contest.

Rhode Island College led in shots, 34-20 (16-8 in the second half), and ground balls, 30-20. Neither team did well in free position shots as RIC was 0-for-4 and the Lancers were 1-for-5. Worcester State is now 6-3 all-time against the Anchorwomen.  

WSU will open NEWLA play with Framingham State on Friday night at 7 PM while Rhode Island College entertains Lasell on Thursday at 4 o'clock.
