Women's Basketball to Host Return of the 13th Annual Math Madness Game

WORCESTER, Mass. - Worcester State University Women’s Basketball will host its 13th Annual Math Madness game next Monday, January 9 as the Lancers host nationally ranked Amherst College in non-conference action at John P. Brissette Court. Tip-off is scheduled for 12 p.m.

Five hundred students, ranging from kindergarten through eighth grade from the local May St. and Tatnuck Magnet schools, are expected to be in attendance for the game.

“The math madness game is a great experience for both the college players & the kids” states graduate student and team center, Sarah Blomgren. “The gym is loud & filled with smiles & energy. The kids get to watch a college game while solving math problems, cheering for both teams & having fun. It’s one of the best games of the year.” 

The annual event brings area school children onto Worcester State’s campus for a unique opportunity to not only watch but interact during a live college basketball game. Each student is given a packet of basketball-centered math problems to complete over the course of the game, with question on scores, court dimensions, player statistics, and more.

At the game’s conclusion, attendees will get a chance to meet the players from both teams, as both the Lancers and the Mammoths will be signing autographs and posing for photos.

“We are excited to have our Math Madness game back after COVID” says head coach Karen Tessmer. “We love having the local school kids on campus, they get to combine math work, with watching a competitive college basketball game.  They are having fun while developing their math skills and get the opportunity to cheer on and then meet student athletes from both teams, a "win-win" for everyone!!”
