Worcester, MA --- For the seventh time in as many years, the Worcester State women's basketball team will be hosting a "Math Madness" event for local elementary and middle school students this Thursday at 12 PM against Suffolk.
The event, which will be held at WPI's Harrington Auditorium, will allow local children the opportunity to enrich their math skills through basketball.
With approximately 200 students expected to participate from the May Street School and the Forest Grove Middle School, the event is designed to offer students the opportunity to answer questions from grade appropriate math packets.
The questions will engage the students in solving problems related to player's statistics, scores, averages, court dimensions, the height of the basket from the floor and other math equations.
Immediately following the conclusion of the contest, students will have the opportunity to meet and greet players from both teams.
Worcester State is currently 7-3 before a home matchup against Johnson and Wales on Tuesday at WPI. They were victorious in both of their games at home last semester.
Senior Julie Frankian (Millbury, MA) leads the club with 16.3 points per game while junior Bianca Langford (Worcester, MA/Holy Name) is averaging double figures with 13.2 points and 11.7 boards in 10 contests. Senior Shannen El-Qasem (Rutland, MA) has also scored 12.0 points with 7.3 rebounds.
Suffolk is 3-6 on the campaign before playing Connecticut College tonight.
Senior Shelby Santini (Winchester, MA) and junior Alessandra Quadri (Sudbury, MA) both average 11.0 and 10.1 points per game, respectively, while senior Tori Brillaud (N. Andover, MA) has grabbed 8.7 caroms per game for the Rams.
WSU leads the all-time series 7-2 as Suffolk has taken each of the last two meetings.
