#3 George Fox Hands Worcester State 70-42 Setback
Honolulu, HI --- Third-ranked George Fox defeated Worcester State, 70-42, this afternoon in the Hoop N' Surf Tournament at McKinley High School. Freshman Shannen El-Qasem had a game-best 10 points while sophomore Meaghan Burns registered nine points and six boards in the loss for the Blue and Gold.
Honolulu, HI --- George Fox senior Keisha Jordan (Vancouver, WA) tallied a game-best 19 points and junior Hannah Munger (Newburg, OR) added 18 points with seven rebounds as the Bruins defeated Worcester State, 70-42, this afternoon at the Hoop N' Surf Tournament at McKinley High School.
George Fox, who is ranked third in the latest D3hoops.com poll, remain unbeaten at 10-0 while the Lancers slip to 4-6 overall. The Bruins were the Division III National Champions in 2009 and made their fourth National Semifinals appearance last season.
The Blue and Gold were paced by freshman Shannen El-Qasem (Rutland, MA) who netted 11 points with four boards as sophomore Meaghan Burns (W. Brookfield, MA) added nine points and six boards in the setback. Senior Kaleigh Charette (Fairhaven, MA) pitched in with eight points and a trio of steals.
Freshman Jami Roos (Salem, OR) also chipped in with 11 points and four assists in 21 minutes of action for the Bruins while Jordan dished out four helpers herself.
With George Fox up13-9 with 12:23 left to play, the Bruins scored nine unanswered points to take a 22-9 advantage five minutes later. The Lancers would end the scoring drought and cut the lead to nine on three occasions in the last 3:30 of the opening period, but would George Fox eventually settle for the 31-20 advantage at the break.
The Bruins were limited to a 30 percent line from the field in the first half (10-for-33) before they connected for more than half of their shots in the second period (55 percent – 16-for-29). Worcester State was held for 29 percent for the game (13-for-45) while nearly half of their offense came from the charity stripe (15-for-21 – 71 percent).
George Fox capitalized on their opportunities off of turnovers as they held a 20-9 margin in the category. They also finished with leads in total rebounds (43-29), offensive caroms (14-6) and points in the paint (30-10).
With eight points this afternoon, Charette needs exactly 50 to become the 18th member of the 1,000 point club with 950 career points.
The Lancers play their next game on the road against Western New England on Thursday, January 5 at 7 PM before opening MASCAC play by visiting Framingham State at 3 o'clock on Saturday, January 7.
George Fox travels to Concordia-Portland next Tuesday for a non-conference affair at 7 PM (Pacific Standard Time).
