Women's Basketball Falls To Southwestern On San Antonio Trip

Georgetown, TX --- The Pirates used a pair of nine point runs, one in each half, to defeat Worcester State University 65-51 on Wednesday afternoon at home. Southwestern improves to 9-1 with the win while WSU falls to 6-3 on the season.

The Pirates opened the game on a 9-0 run, holding the Lancers scoreless until the 14:41 mark. Transition layups were the key to Southwestern's success as they mounted a 14 point lead and headed into the break up 32-18.

Worcester State was held to 25.8 percent from the field in the period and they were one for seven from three point range while SU made 12 of their 26 attempts from the floor in the opening period (46%). The Pirates nearly doubled the Lancer's rebounds, recording 27 boards to WSU's 14 in the first half.

Down 38-24 early on in the second half, the Lancers used a 13-0 spurt to get within a basket. Sophomore Kara Rogers (Lowell, MA) notched five of their 13 points in the run as classmate Gina Sicuso (Stoneham, MA) converted a lay-up to trail, 38-37, with 12:58 left to play.

But Southwestern was able to regroup outscored the visitors 9-0 due in large part to five points from Anna Fareed (Kingwood, TX) and led by ten just two minutes later.

SU extended the lead to 16 points with just under six minutes to play and never looked back. Worcester State never got closer than 11 points and the Pirates held them to without a field goal in the final 3:43 of the game.

Southwestern shot 40 percent from the field (23-for-58) and were led by Fareed's 14 points.

Joining Fareed in double digit scoring were freshman Chelsea Leeder (Nacogdoches, TX) and senior Staley Mullins (Dallas, TX) who both had 11 points. Mullins completed her second consecutive double-double with 12 rebounds, a game high.

By the conclusion of the contest the Pirates only held a three-point margin in total rebounds (46-43) as Worcester State had the 18-12 edge on the offensive glass. WSU also held a slim lead in points off of turnovers (14-13).

Junior Kaleigh Charette (Fairhaven, MA) highlighed the Lancers with 14 points while senior Alexis George (Worcester, MA/Holy Name) added 10 points. Rogers chipped in with eight points and seven boards while sophomore Meaghan O'Keefe (Warren, MA) grabbed a team-best eight caroms.

Senior Kathleen Foley (Hudson, NH), who is in second-place in the record-book with 128 career three pointers, now has 504 career points.

Worcester State will play again tomorrow against Schreiner University at 5:30 to close out their trip to Texas while Southwestern returns to conference play with a road contest against Austin College on Friday evening at 4 PM.
