Worcester State: 9
Mass. Maritime: 1
How it Happened:
The Senior Day match up started off quick with the runs as the Mass Maritime Buccaneers got an early lead 1-0 in the top of the first. Keeping the energy high, the Lancers came out in the bottom of the second inning with the bats fired up starting with senior Morgan Keefe (Dracut, MA) singling up the middle and making her way around the bases as freshman Zoie Stevens (Claremont, NH) and first year Kate Johansson (Lynn, MA) worked together with back to back singles sending Keefe home to tie the game up 1-1. Senior Bailey Tammaro (Fitchburg, MA) kept the runs coming with another single up the middle sending Stevens across the plate. With bases loaded, senior Amanda Adamuska (Dudley, MA) singled to left field advancing all the runners and allowing Johansson to come home. Another senior Emma Lapoint (Westfield, MA) also singled to left field, getting Tammaro to score and landing the Lancers up 4-1. The inning ended with the Buccaneers accomplishing a double play on the Lancers.
Worcester State stayed on top going into the bottom of the fourth inning with Callie Brouillard (Millbury, MA) doubling to deep left field, marking her 100th career base hit. Riding off that excitement had senior Bella Gasbarro (Leominster, MA) double to left field leaving Brouillard to make her way across the plate. Keefe then hit another single to right field that allowed Gasbarro to score before ending the fourth inning 6-1.
The bottom of the fifth would be the final inning of this matchup with Stevens, Tammaro, and Brouillard scoring for the Lancers and claiming the 9-1 victory.
Junior Peyton Maloney (West Boylston, MA) pitched for the complete game with five strikeouts and one earned run.
Final
Worcester State: 7
Mass. Maritime: 5
How it Happened:
Mass. Maritime would be first up to bat again for the second game, with a similar start with this game as the Buccaneers quickly scored a run to leave the score at 1-0 for the first inning and a half.
The score stood there until the bottom of the second inning where the Lancers kept the energy from the first game going. Stevens started it off with a single to right field, and senior Carissa Andrews (Medford, MA) laid a bunt down advancing Stevens and landing herself safely on first. Staying in the bunt spirit, Tammaro found a spot on first making the bases loaded. Brouillard then hit a sacrifice fly to right field advancing all the runners including Stevens to cross the plate. With the score tied 1-1, Adamuska came up to bat and singled up the middle allowing Tammaro and Andrews to score and put Worcester State up 3-1. Lapoint found herself on base after a walk, which would prove helpful with Gasbarro coming up and hitting a homerun over the fence in center field, sending herself and Lapoint home making the score 5-1.
The bottom of the third inning started with a walk to senior Camden Heenan (Webster, MA), that would lead to her crossing the plate after a sacrifice fly from Tammaro.
Moving quickly into the top of the fifth, Mass. Maritime was determined to put more runs on the board, scoring one more run to move the score to 6-2. They continued that enthusiasm going into the top of the sixth, where their bats found the ball and they were able to claim 4 hits and move runners around the bases to tighten up the score 6-5.
Wanting to widen the difference, the Lancers' Brouillard tripled to left field to start the bottom of the sixth. Adamuska flied out to center field as a sacrifice, letting Brouillard put another run on the board for Worcester State. The top of the seventh consisted of three quick outs, leaving the final score at 7-5.
Junior Taylor Coonan (Grafton, MA) would go 5.2 innings with two strikeouts while first year Taylor Stuart (Sterling, MA) would grab the save allowing just one hit.
