Worcester, MA- After a near split on their high level action on Spring Break, the Worcester State Softball team (4-6, 0-0) returns for their home opener tonight as they took on WPI in both teams first games back to New England after their trips to Florida.
Final
Worcester State: 0
WPI: 8
How it Happened:
In the first game of the doubleheader, the Lancers got on base as a result of an error from the pitcher on the throw to first base, and senior outfielder Bailey Tammaro (Fitchburg, MA) got the momentum started for the Lancers, but they were unable to convert that base runner to a run across the plate. In the bottom of the fourth inning, first-year catcher Olivia Pirrotta (Uxbridge, MA) was walked to put the Lancers on base, but the Engineers defense held down the threat and closed out the game in the sixth inning with their eighth run and the victory.
Final
Worcester State: 1
WPI: 6
How it Happened:
In the second game, first-year infielder Kate Johansson (Fitchburg, MA) got on base first for the Lancers, but the curse of the first carried into the second as the runner was not able to find all four bases in the diamond. Tammaro would register the first hit for the Lancers in the game in hopes of getting a run scored on the day, and the upcoming batters would work the pitcher but WPI would hold solid to allow no damage.
The biggest threat of the day was in the fifth inning as senior Bella Gasbarro (Leominster, MA) would single down the left field line and was brought to second as senior Carisa Andrews (Medford, MA) would lay down a perfect bunt towards shortstop and foot speed placing two runners on. Senior Morgan Keefe (Dracut, MA) would lay the bases for the Lancers on a dropping single into left. Senior Amanda Adamuska (Dudley, MA) would claim an RBI on the game as her hit towards third would send in Gasbarro for a Worcester run.
The sixth would find WPI with an additional run but Worcester would again look to threaten early as Tammaro would single up the middle for an early runner on base. Gasbarro would add an additional runner with two outs with a single to the shortstop, but were unable to force a second run in for Worcester in the sixth.
Junior Peyton Maloney (West Boylston, MA) went the full seven innings recording six strikeouts in the action.
