Worcester, MA- In the second to last day of Spring break action, the Worcester State Softball team (2-4, 0-0) had two top midday meetings on the day. Game one saw the Lancers take on the Ramapo Roadrunners before facing off against the UNE Northeasters.
Final
Worcester State: 3
Ramapo: 4
How it Happened:
It would be a pitching and fielding duel between the two teams in this lead off battle of the game for Worcester. First year Taylor Stuart (Sterling, MA) would take command of the mound for Worcester with the support of a solid defense to stay on top of the pressure for roadrunners. Ramapo would claim single runs in the third and fourth but the top of the fifth saw Worcester load up the bases as senior Bella Gasbarro (Leominster, MA) would send a sacrifice fly out to center for senior Camden Heenan (Webster, MA) to race home for their first run. A wild pitch while senior Amanda Adamuska (Dudley, MA) worked the count would allow fellow senior Emma Lapoint (Westfield, MA) to record the second run and tie the game up.
Ramapo would reclaim the lead with another single run in the bottom of the fifth and Worcester would nearly get the run back in the sixth before a diving left field catch ended the endeavor. Worcester would go for the tie and the win in the seventh, getting junior Cali Brouillard (Millbury, MA) on base with a single out. Another Adamuska at bat would see Brouillard push to second on a stolen base to put the tying run on second with two outs. Adamuska would push the ball to left center for a single and a runner home to settle the score at 3-3. The Roadrunners would manage to send a run across the plate in the bottom of the seventh as Worcester fell in the walk off.
Stuart would go six innings in the action allowing just six hits while claiming four strikeouts in the start.
Final
Worcester State: 1
UNE: 2
What's Next:
Worcester would jump out early in the first inning of game two as Adamuska nabbed the walk and Keefe doubled to left field to bring Adamuska to third. First year Ella Snyder would then drill a single to right field bringing Adamuska across for the opening run of the game.
The second would be quiet for both teams as neither team managed to add additional runs to the scoreboard but the third would have a different tune as the Nor'Easters worked two runs across. Gasbarro and Keefe worked to get in a tying run at the bottom of the third but were unable to make it around the final turn for home.
The fourth would be another defensive battle with pitching, foul balls a plenty and quick fielding setting the tone that would last through the sixth bringing the final action to the bottom of the seventh.
Keefe would work the count to find the winning run at the plate with a single out recorded with senior Carisa Andrews (Medford, MA) stepping and grabbing the steal to advance to second. But the magic was not at the plate as the Lancers went down swinging in the 2-1 final.
Junior Peyton Maloney (West Boylston, MA) would go for the complete game, recording eight strikeouts in the meeting.
The Lancers (2-6, 0-0) close out Spring break tomorrow morning with meetings with McDaniel College and Plymouth State.
