Lancers Complete Day Three of Spring Games

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Worcester State Lancers went 1-2 in their second consecutive triple-header, dropping games to Kalamazoo and Thomas, and beating Allegheny College in eight innings of play.

GAME ONE: Worcester State 2, Kalamazoo 9

Worcester State dropped their first game of the day, as Kalamazoo scored nine runs on 12 hits and three Lancer errors.

The Hornets came up swinging as they put one run up in the bottom of the 1^st on two hits and one error. Angelina Evangelista (Shelby Township, Mich.) bunted to reach base, from where she stole second to get into scoring position. Next up, Nori Seita (Battle Creek, Mich.) singled through the left side, scoring Evangelista at the plate to change the score to 1-0.

Kalamazoo added to the lead in the bottom of the 3^nd and 4^th innings, scoring two and three runs, respectively, claiming the 6-0 advantage going into the 5^th inning.

Worcester State scored two runs in the top of the 6^th inning on a two-run homerun from Sydney Despres (Sterling, Mass.). Though, the Lancers were not able to generate a comeback, as the Hornets scored three runs in the bottom of the 6^th, resulting in the 9-2 victory for the Hornets.

Worcester State's Mary McKeown (Shrewsbury, Mass.) registered the loss, pitching five innings for the Lancers. Kalamazoo's Seita claimed her first win of the season.

GAME TWO: Worcester State 8, Allegheny 7

Worcester State's Sara Pelletier (Leominster, Mass.) hit the game-winning RBI single to score Corrie Derosier (Shrewsbury, Mass.) at the plate, defeating the Allegheny Gators 8-7 in eight innings played.

Worcester State took the early advantage as Taylor Daniels (Norco, Calif.) scored on a wild pitch. The Lancers added to their 1-0 lead in the 2^nd when Meghan Rich (Chelmsford, Mass.) tripled down the right field line, scoring her teammate, Courtney Salisubry (Cranston, RI) at the plate for the second run of the game.

The Gators scored one in the bottom of the 2^nd to cut their deficit in half, but only for the Lancers to put two more runs on the board in the top of the 3^rd inning.

The Gators came back with a promising inning in the bottom of the 4^th when they scored two runs on two hits from Belle Mazurik (Saegertown, Pa.) and Alexis Ryan (Claridge, Pa.) to move the score to 4-3, though, still in Worcester's favor.

Worcester scored three runs to answer Allegheny's two, marking a 7-3 tip for the Blue and Gold.

Allegheny scored one more run, and looked as if the victory was going to be handed to the Lancers, but the Gators rallied in the bottom of the 7^th to tie the game at 10-10 on three hits from Mazurik, Taylor Massart (Sarver, Pa.), and Allie Landowski (Lower Burrell, Pa.).

With the international tie-breaker in place, Worcester State's Pelletier scored the winning run and then also closed out the bottom of the 8^th with a stunning throw from left field to home plate to get Allegheny's tying run out at the plate to assert the win.

Lancers' Daniels went 4-for-5 on the afternoon, with a team-high two RBI and one run. Pelletier went 2-for-4, as did Worcester State's winning pitcher, Rich. Allegheny's relief pitcher, Allison Cabo (Woodstown, NJ) took the loss for the Gators, as it was her second on the season.

GAME THREE: Worcester State 2, Thomas 8

The Thomas Terriers shutout the Worcester State Lancers until the bottom of the 6^th inning when the Blue and Gold scored two runs off of three hits from Taylor Daniels (Norco, Calif.), Sydney Despres (Sterling, Mass.), and Marissa Avanzato (Pittsfield, Mass.), along with an RBI walk from Hayley Terry (N. Dighton, Mass.).

The Terriers scored one run in the 1^st, and held the 1-0 advantage until they added to it in the top of the 4^th, and then a remarkable four runs in the top of the 5^th. The Terriers looked as if they were going to close out the game with an eight point lead on the Lancers in the 6^th inning. However, the Lancers came storming in with two runs on hits to advance the game into the seventh and final inning.

Neither team scored in the 7^th inning, resulting in the 8-2 win for the Thomas Terriers – their first on the season. With the loss, the Lancers drop to 3-5.

The Lancers will take a break from play tomorrow, and will return to Hancock Park in Clermont, Fla. on Thursday, for yet, another triple-header. The teams Worcester State will face include: Wellesley, Fredonia, Salve Regina.
