Softball Splits To Open Up Florida Trip
Fort Meyers, FL --- The softball team split a pair of games this afternoon as they defeated the Polytechnic College of New York 2-0 before they lost to Brockport State by the same score. Junior Michaella Mahoney scattered three hits while she fanned six as she blanked Polytechnic.

Fort Meyers, FL --- The softball team split a pair of games this afternoon as they defeated the Polytechnic College of New York 2-0 before they lost to Brockport State by the same score.
In their season opening triumph over the Bluejays (1-4), sophomore Michaella Mahoney (Shrewsbury, MA) tossed a three-hit shutout as she allowed two walks. Mahoney also struck out six and hit one batter.
Offensively sophomore newcomer Erica Cordio (Leominster, MA) paced the Lancers (1-1) as she went 2-for-4 with a lead-off triple as senior Ashley Loomer (Pepperell, MA) drove her in. Cordio would also finish the game with a double while second-year Ashley Howe (Wichendon, MA) and freshman Kate Souder (Milford, MA) chipped in with two hits apiece.
In the setback against Brockport State (4-0), freshman Melissa Beaudry (Worcester, MA/St. Peter-Marian) shouldered the loss despite pitching well in the losing effort. She gave up two runs while also scattering seven hits with no walks and four punchouts.
The Golden Eagles did their damage scoring a run in the third and sixth innings. Senior Ona Halladay (Palmyra, NY) pushed across the first run with an RBI double. For their insurance run, fourth-year Kim Gabor (Cheektowga, NY) plated pinch-runner junior Nicki Odrobina (Depew, NY), who swiped second to get into scoring position.
Howe would go 2-for-3 with a double while Cordio also added a pair of hits and a stolen base. The Lancers had a frustrating game at the plate as they stranded a pair of batters in scoring position in both the first two frames.
Junior pitcher Stephanie Geer (Binghampton, NY) would also shut down the WSC as she retired 15 of the last 18 batters she faced in the game. The only balls that left the infield were hits by Cordio and Howe in the fifth and seventh innings. Geer (2-0) also fanned nine while yielding seven hits in the shutout.
The Lancers will continue their southern swing when they take on Curry and Amherst tomorrow at 4 PM and 6 PM, respectively.
