Papierski Takes Top Spots to Lead Lancers at BSU Invite
Worcester, MA- In a prep meet that would provide the Track and Field team their first in depth look at their MASCAC Championship site in two weeks, the Worcester State Men’s Track and Field team was ready to set their marks and put the conference on watch. The Lancers were led by sophomore Garrett Papierski (Webster, MA) who led the day with two top finishes in the shot put and the discus.
Worcester, MA- In a prep meet that would provide the Track and Field team their first in depth look at their MASCAC Championship site in two weeks, the Worcester State Men's Track and Field team was ready to set their marks and put the conference on watch. The Lancers were led by sophomore Garrett Papierski (Webster, MA) who led the day with two top finishes in the shot put and the discus.
The Lancers would start their day off with big wins as they claimed first, third and fourth in the triple jump in the early morning action as first years Michael Mireku (Worcester, MA) would take the top spot on a 12.07m leap for a new personal best followed by fellow first year Tommy Silva in third with a 11.25m and senior Giovanni Casiano in fourth on a 10.25m landing. Senior Nicholas Violette (Webster, MA) would keep the success going for Worcester in the Pole Vault where he claimed second on a 2.95m height to additionally set a new personal record on the day. Violette would continue his jumping prowess with an eight place finish in the long jump with a 5.89 mark reaching just ahead of first year Antonio Tyndale (Worcester, MA) who finished in 11th with a 5.47m. Fellow first year James Almeida (Auburn, MA) would take home 15th on a 5.23m with senior Giovanni Casiano (Oxford, MA) in 17th with. 4.85m and junior Seth Boudreau (Douglas, MA) in 18th at 4.78m.
In the throwing ring, Papierski would take home fourth in the hammer on a 34.71m with first year Hunter Cormier (Westminster, MA) taking seventh with a 32.37m and junior andrew Lucier (Garnder, MA) finishing in 16th on a 26.01m mark. Papierski would claim not only a new PR in the shot put but first place as well on a 13.16m toss to lead the Lancer quartet that was rounded out by first years Gavin Delgado (Douglas, MA) in seventh on a 11.49m, Zachary Stewart in 14th with a 9.23m landing and Dominic Beauchesne (Dudley, MA) in 16th on a 9.02m mark. Stewart would also compete in the javelin where he would finish in 15th on a 27.80m landing with Cormier in 10th on a 36.58m and Delgado in 13th with a 34.05m mark. Closing out the field events and the day for Worcester were Papierski, Delgado, Cormier and Beauchesne. Papierski would take first in the event on a 39.11for his second new personal record of the day just ahead of Delgado with a 33.44 landing. Cormier recorded a 26.74m while Beauchesne landed at 24.40m to close out the field action.
On the track senior Alex Lucier (Gardner, MA) would claim third in 1500m with a 4;33.14 edging out first year Dan Smith (Medway, MA) by 10 seconds who finished in fourth on a time of 4:43.15 and junior Alex Matsuyasu (Newton, MA) in sixth on a 5:21.47. Leading off the track events was sophomore Kelan Mahoney (Oakham, MA) who would take first in the 3000m Steeplechase in 11:16.04. Next up would find the 400m on the track with the Lancers sprinting in pack time led by first year Ryan Brown (Salem, MA) in seventh on a 55.78, followed by junior Alan Gomez (Clinton, MA) in eight on a 55.89, first year Taku Pettengill (Shirley, MA) in ninth at 56.33 and Mireku in 10th at 58.59. Rounding out the Lancer lappers was junior Andrew Stokes (Wilmington, MA) who crossed in 12th at 63.59.
Leading the charge in the 100m was Boudreau who claimed fifth on a time of 11.19 in the blustery wind with sophomore Tyshawn Craigg (Springfield, MA) finishing in 14th on 11.65, with first year Albert Kyereme (Springfield, MA) in 17th with 12.63 and Almeida in 18th on 11.90. Sophomore Khalijiah King (Natick, MA) would wrap up the contingent with a 12.63m that was good for 22nd in the race. Boudreau would lead the crew in the 200m with a 22.96 10th place finish while Kyereme claimed 16th on a 23.61 and Craigg claimed 19th with a 23.75. Violette would add to his day's resume with a 22nd place finish on a time of 24.28 while Gomez took home 26th on 24.79 while Tyndale was just a breadth behind at 27th with a 24.93 and Harvey would end in 29th with a 25.25.
With the two lap distance on the day Mahoney would return to action, this time claiming fourth with a time of 2:10.19 while fellow teammate senior Brian O'Leary (Marlborough, MA) would end the day in sixth on a time of 2:13.77.
Worcester State is back in action next Friday when they journey down to Eastern Connecticut for the Bonnie Edmondson Classic.
