Team Effort Pushes Worcester State Track and Field to 7 Place Finish at Jim Sheehan Memorial Meet

Worcester, MA- The Worcester State Men's Track and Field returned to action today as they competed in the Jim Sheehan Memorial Track meet at Fitchburg College. The men continued their success of the season as sophomore Brodie Jacques (Rehoboth, MA), seniors Daniel Clark (Worcester, MA) and Colin Brennan (Newbury, MA) and first year James Riley (Shrewsbury, MA) led topped their events leading the Lancers success on the day as Lancers place 7^th with 51 points at this afternoons meet.

The Men's Track and Field team were dominate in both speed and strength today as they hit top marks in todays meet at Fitchburg State. Jacques continued his success in his third meet of the outdoor season with a second place finish of 6.55m in the long jump. First years Seth Boudreau (Douglas, MA) finished in 24^th with a 5.22m leap while sophomore Giovanni Casiano leaped to 5.15m for 26^th place. 24 was the number of the day for Boudreau, as he finished his 200m race in 24.45 seconds for 24^th. First year Elvis Velez (Clinton, MA) crossed in 14^th in a time of 23.63 seconds while junior Anthony Paolucci (Billerica, MA) crossed in 27.37 seconds for a 60^th place crossing. The Lancers had equal success in the 100m as Jacques again finished strong with a 6^th place finish in a time of 11.23 seconds. Velez was just 4 milliseconds behind in a time of 11.63 for 14^th place while Casiano crossed in 12.17 seconds for 31^st.

The Lancers were not solely successful in the sprints as Clark crossed in third place in the 800m in a time of 2:03.27 to continue his season success. First year Alexander Lucier was just 6 seconds behind, crossing in a time of 2:09.74 for an 11th place finish on the afternoon. Gavaletz combined his jumping prowess with his sped today, competing in the 400m hurdles, where he came in a speedy fifth place, clearing his hurdles in a time of 64.24 seconds. His jumps kept him in solid stead in the triple jump as well, as he leaped to a 7^th place finish after marking 11.82m. Boudreau returned to break his 24 curses in the 400m, this time coming in seventh place in a time of 53.50. Senior Brendan Sharkey crossed just over two seconds later in 15^th with a time of 55.90. First year Alan Gomez and Paulucci rounded out the 400m competitors with a 26^th (59.85 second) and 30^th (65.00 second) place finish on the afternoon.

The distance runners made a strong showing on the day as first year James Riley (Shrewsbury, MA) competed in the 3000m Steeplechase, where he crossed in an impressive 4^th place, with a time of 10:21.46 while fellow first year Alexander Matsuyasu (Newton, MA) started the race off with a grueling 10000m race to come in seventh with a time of 37:16.96. The 1500m brought junior Matthew Talbot (Belchertown, MA) and first year Andrew Stokes (Wilmington, MA) to the starting line where they crossed in 15^th at 4:36.02 and 34^th at a time of 5:11.32.

Closing out the track events today was the 4x800 relay team of Boudreau, Clark, sophomore Brian O'Leary (Marlborough, MA) and Gavaletz. As each runner took two loops around the track, they relay team was able to secure a 2^nd place finish with a time of 9:35.61 to tack onto the teams impressive finishes on the afternoon.

The field events did not disappoint today either, as Brennan went for distance in the Javelin, measuring a 51.64m throw that placed in 4^th in the event. Junior Matthew Long (East Bridgewater, MA) measured in at 44.24m and a solid 11^th place in the event. Junior Jack Houlihan broke the 40m mark in the discus, going 40.39m to claim third in the event, while sophomore Max O'Connor reached 35.79m for a 10^th place finish. The duo would quickly jump back into action for the Hammer throw with Houlihan placing 10^th with a 37.63m while O'Connor placed 21^st with a 28.67m release. Long joined the pair with a 22^nd place finish after a throw of 28.44m to wrap up the meet.

The Men's Outdoor Track and Field team are back in action on April 22^nd as they travel to Tuft's University for the Tuft's Sunshine Classic in a last prep race before the MASCAC Championship.
