Men's Indoor Track Places Fifth at Tartan Invitational

Northampton, MA --- Junior Jim Macera (Paxton, MA) notched third with a toss of 15.12 meters in the weight throw to qualify for the ECAC championships while sophomore Robert Stahelski (South Deerfield, MA) reset the school record in the 600 meter run as the men’s indoor track team placed fifth Saturday at the Tartan Invitational hosted by Smith.

WPI won the meet for the second time in three years with 169.5 points to edge out RPI’s second place finish with 162 points. Amherst came in third (124) followed by Westfield State (83) while the Lancers (55) beat out Assumption for sixth (41).

Stahelski took second in the 600 running 1:26.69 beating out the school record of current assistant coach Matt Swett by .01 seconds. Stahelski’s record did not come easy as senior Chris Mancuso (Rowley, MA) finished right behind him in third place with a time of 1:26.75.

Macera’s throw put him in fifth in the Division III New England rankings and he is also now tied for 10th in the Division III ECAC rankings.

Senior Mark Johnson (Woburn, MA) continued his impressive season as he notched a top finish in the 200 (22.88) and fourth in the 400 (51.80).

Freshman Nicholas Capone (Billerica, MA) threw fifth in the shot put (11.93m) while sophomore Joseph Naikelis (Millbury, MA) took 10th in the weight throw (10.56m). Macera finished his afternoon placing 10th in the shot put (11.07m).

Senior Matt Leeds (Bellingham, MA) took home third in the triple jump (12.04m) and sixth in the long jump (5.76m) while first-year James Goyette (Millbury, MA) placed eighth in the long jump (5.68m) to round out the field for the Lancers.

In relay action Worcester State’s 4x400 relay team of that featured Stahelski and Johnson finished in sixth with a time of 3:40.94.

WSC will continue their season when they head to Southern Maine for the MASCAC/New England Alliance Championships next Saturday.
