Men's Soccer Defeated By Trinity, 4-1
Worcester, MA --- Senior Alex Wolfel netted his team leading fourth goal of the campaign in the 58th minute but it was not enough as the Lancers fell to Trinity, 4-1, in non-conference men's soccer action this evening at Coughlin Field.
Worcester, MA --- Trinity freshman Cody Savonen (Orleans, MA) connected on the eventual game winning marker in the 50th minute to ignite second half outburst and lead the way to a 4-1 victory over Worcester State in non-conference men's soccer action this evening at Coughlin Field.
The Bantams (2-0) got out to the early 1-0 lead in the 29th minute of play when senior Will Stankiewicz (Townsend, MA) broke free from the defense and let loose a rocket from 15 yards out for his first goal of the season.
The Lancers (0-1-3) played great defense throughout the period and were able to keep the one goal deficit heading into the break despite being outshot 10-1 and faced five corner kicks without having one of their own.
After the intermission Savonen was able to make it a two-goal advantage for the Navy and Gold when he blasted a shot into the back of the net from 15 yards away at the 49:59 mark.
Just under five minutes later senior Christian Carrasquillo (Manchester, CT) increased the lead when he was able to corral a free kick attempt at the top of the box and connect from the left side of the net for the 3-0 benefit.
Worcester State got on the board in the 58th minute when senior Alex Wolfel (Unionville, CT) registered his team-leading fourth goal of the campaign when he received a beautiful middle cross off a breakaway by classmate Brian Cormier (Hudson, MA) and fired it across the goal line for the 3-1 score.
That turned out to be the only offense WSU could muster as Trinity added another goal in the 68th minute when third-year Timothy Shea (Somerset, MA) headed home a free kick from first-year Mike Cooke (Boston, MA) the final score.
The Bantams outshot the hosts 24-6 for the contest and also held the 7-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Trinity senior net minder James Ciano (Syosset, NY) was not called upon to make a save as he earned his first win of the season while WSU second-year keeper Nick Zucco (Ludlow, MA) recorded four stops. Zucco's record falls to 0-1-3 in the setback.
Both teams return to the field Saturday as Worcester State will remain at home to face-off with Southern Maine at 3:30 PM and Trinity returns home for a noontime affair with Williams College.
