Deuces Wild As Men's Soccer Draws With Rhode Island College, 2-2 In 2OT's

Worcester, MA --- Senior Alex Wolfel (Unionville, CT) netted a pair of goals including the game-tying marker in the 87th minute to send the game into extra time and help lead Worcester State to a  2-2 draw in double-overtime with visiting Rhode Island College this evening in non-conference men's soccer action at Coughlin Field. 

The Anchormen (1-0-2) got on the board first in the 25th minute when third-year Emmanuel Asiedu (Lincoln, RI) found the back of the net on a free kick from 20 yards back for the 1-0 advantage.

The Lancers (0-0-3) brought it back to even with less than minute to play in the first half when Wolfel connected on the equalizer with a laser from 15 yards away off a great feed by classmate Eugene Duah (Worcester, MA/Burncoat) for the 1-1 halftime score. 

RIC regained the one goal advantage when sophomore Jose Zarraga's (Providence, RI) header tickled the twine off a corner kick from first-year Anderson Monteiro (Pawtucket, RI) just 11 minutes into the second stanza.

However, the marker proved to be the only shot that the Anchormen attempted in the second half as the Blue and Gold shut down their opponents with solid play in the midfield over the final 34 minutes of action in the second half. 

Wolfel was the hero late in the game as he chased down a high ball off the foot of freshman Tanner Bzdel (Southampton, MA), just beating the goalie to the ball and by chipping it into the net from 30 yards back for the 2-2 tie at the 87:19 mark of play.

Late in the first overtime frame WSU had back-to-back scoring chances in the 100th minute as Wolfel let loose from ten yards back trying to pick the bottom left corner and second-year Alfred Sogja (Shkoder, Albania) corralled the rebound only to be stuffed by freshman net-minder Christopher Moura (Rumford, RI) sending the game into the second extra session. 

RIC had the best scoring chance of the final stanza sophomore Kevin Arboleda (Pawtucket, RI) fired a high chip from close range that was swatted high over the net by second-year keeper Nick Zucco (Ludlow, MA) at the 104:32 mark of action to preserve the tie.

Zucco turned aside three shots in obtaining his third tie of the young season as Moura ran his record to 1-0-2 while stabbing seven balls for RIC. 

Worcester State outshot the visitors 17-12 while also holding the advantage in corner kicks 7-4.

The Lancers take a week off before hosting Trinity next Wednesday night at 7 PM and the Anchormen return home for a noon-time affair on Saturday with Roger Williams.
