UMass Dartmouth Powers Through Worcester State, 6-2

NEW BEDFORD, MASS. -  Junior Casey Shea (Woburn, Mass.) more than doubled his season goal total on Saturday evening, powering UMass Dartmouth to a 6-2 victory over MASCAC opponent, Worcester State at Hetland Arena. With the win, the Corsairs improve to 4-5-3 on the year and 3-2-2 in conference play, while the Lancers fall to 3-9-1 and 0-6-1 within MASCAC competition.

Shea's masterful night of four goals on six shots began 44 seconds into the second period when he found the back of the net by going top-shelf on Lancers' freshman net minder Max Kirkwood (Brunswick, Ohio). Junior Mike Kelly (Stoneham, Mass.) and sophomore Mike Sones (Waterdown, Ontario) were credited with the assists.

The Lancers responded to Shea's goal when freshman Kyle Baker (Fresno, Calif.) buried a pass from sophomore Mike Palmer (Grafton, Mass.) and junior Alex DeWitz (Oronoco, Minn.)

Shea's second goal came on a penalty shot, set up from a Lancer slashing call on the junior's charge to the net. Shea beat Kirkwood on the backhand to earn what would be the game winner.

Sophomore Alex Pommerville (Macedon, N.Y.) struck back for the visiting team, taking the pass from senior Joe White (Wonder Lake, Ill.) on the man advantage.

To complete the hat trick, Shea received a pass from Joe Echelmeier (Doylestown, Pa.) and Kelly, who once again beat the top glove side of Kirkwood with only 19.2 seconds remaining in the second period.

His fourth and final goal of the night would come with 3:19 remaining in the game, after receiving pass from both Kelly and Sones to dangle past sophomore goalie Tyler Fallica (Coram, N.Y.), increasing the lead to its final margin.

Corsair senior Garrett Allen (Dartmouth, Mass.) collected his third and fourth goals of the season to add to the onslaught. His first goal broke the game open while short-handed, when a wrist shot found the back of the net.

Allen added to his goal total when he took a pass from Kris Holmes (Newburyport, Mass.) and Matt Baldino (Woburn, Mass.) with 4:20 remaining in the contest.

UMass Dartmouth sophomore net minder Drew Michals (Newton, Mass.) was credited with 29 saves and the victory, while Kirkwood received the loss for Worcester State.

The Corsairs outshot the Lancers 35-31, but went 0 for 3 on the man advantage, while Worcester State went 1 for 4 on power plays.

UMass Dartmouth will be back in action next against MASCAC rival Plymouth State at Hetland Arena next Thursday at 7:30 p.m. Worcester State will meet Framingham State on the same evening at 8:30 p.m.
