Ice Hockey Uses Third-Period Comeback to Defeat UMass Darmouth

New Bedford, MA --- The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's hockey team lost to visiting Worcester State, 3-2, in a Massachusetts College Athletic Conference game at the Stephan Hetland Memorial Ice Arena Saturday.

The Corsairs led 2-1 going into the final period. Lancers senior center Andrew Brady (Oreland, PA) tied the game at 2-2 just 17 seconds into the power play when he blasted a one-timer through the legs of UMD senior goalie Jon Dryjowicz-Burek (Ludlow, MA) off a pass from freshman defenseman Eric Rutz (Mechanicsburg, PA) at 4:56. The game-winner also came from the power play. Worcester State junior forward Billy O’Neill (Stafford, PA) tallied the difference-maker when he slid home a wrap around pass from behind the net from sophomore forward Nick Asterito (Philadelphia, PA). The Lancers’ Brady also assisted on the play.

The Corsairs struck first as junior defenseman Mickey Dudley (Douglas, MA) took a nice feed from sophomore forward Giancarlo Capodanno (Mountainside, NJ) and one-timed a shot past the glove-side of Lancers senior goalie Andrew Evans (Cromwell, CT) giving UMD a 1-0 lead at 13:38 of the opening period. Sophomore forward Rob Dudley (Douglas, MA) also assisted on the goal. Worcester State would get a power-play opportunity just before the intermission, but the Corsairs efficiently killed it and went into the break with the lead.

UMD increased their lead to 2-0 at 8:17 of the second period when junior forward Todd Bartelson (Pepperell, MA) redirected a shot in front of goal from the point by senior defenseman Graeme Bourne (Redlands, CA). Senior forward Matt Serino (Saugus, MA) also picked up an assist. The Lancers would cut the deficit in half just over eight minutes later in the middle frame. Senior forward Dan Drinkwater (Walpole, MA) stuffed home the rebound of freshman center Pat Styckiewicz (Chicopee, MA) past Dryjowicz-Burek at 16:39 to make it a 2-1 contest. UMD killed all three of Worcester State’s power play opportunities for the period while the Lancers killed the Corsairs’ only chance.

The Corsairs were 0 for 2 on the power play while the Lancers converted 2 out of 6 chances.

UMass Dartmouth outshot Worcester State, 34-28. Dryjowicz-Burek made 25 saves for the Corsairs, while Evans made 32 for the Lancers.

UMD dropped to 5-10-1 and 1-8-1 in MASCAC play with the loss, while Worcester State improved to 5-9-0 and 3-6-0 in conference play with the victory. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Southern New Hampshire next Thursday evening. The Lancers will host Fitchburg State Thursday.
