UMass Dartmouth 2, Worcester State 1
Auburn, MA --- Freshman Giancarlo Capodanno
(Mountainside, NJ) scored the game-winning tally to break a 1-1 tie
with 26 seconds left in the second period to give UMass-Dartmouth
the hard-fought 2-1 victory over Worcester State this evening in
ECAC Northeast action at Horgan Memorial Rink.
The Corsairs (8-4-1, 6-1 ECAC NE) opened the game with a 1-0 lead
when senior Chris Shore (West Haven, CT) notched
his team-leading sixth goal of the season on a breakaway at 8:21 in
the first period with classmate Chris Paquin
(Warwick, RI) and junior Matt Serino (Saugus, MA) each adding
assists on the play.
The Lancers defense would then hold UMass-Dartmouth scoreless
through the rest of the stanza as WSC junior netminder
Andrew Evans (Cromwell, CT) collected 17 stops in
the opening period.
The Blue and Gold knotted the score with 37 ticks off the clock to
start off the second frame on a tally by freshmen Cody
Warila (Shirley, MA) with help from junior Mark
Rintel (Taunton, MA) and freshman Nick
Asterito (Philadelphia, PA).
The Lancers had three golden chances throughout the second period
to score the go-ahead goal, which included a four on three
power-play at one point, but they could not take advantage of the
opportunity.
That set the stage for Capodanno’s heroics as he broke the
tie to give the Corsairs the lead for good with his fifth goal of
the season.
UMD had eight penalties while WSC finished with just three. The
Corsairs outshot the Lancers 18-5 in the first period, but through
the last two frames UMass Dartmouth just edged out Worcester State
25-20. The Lancers finished 0-6 in power play attempts.
Corsair senior keeper Jeff Green (Medway, MA)
turned aside 24 shots for the Corsairs while Evans ended the
evening with 41 saves.
Worcester State (3-9, 1-5 ECAC NE) will host three games next week
starting with Johnson and Wales on Tuesday at 5:30 while UMass
Dartmouth entertains Lebanon Valley on Saturday and Westfield State
on Sunday at 4:30 PM in a key ECAC Northeast contest.
