Worcester, MA – With their first goals of the season behind them, the Worcester State field hockey team remained hungry for their first victory as they hosted Springfield College in a Thursday night battle.
Final
Worcester State: 1
Springfield: 5
How it Happened:
The Lancers came out strong, applying early pressure and disrupting the Pride's attack. Springfield eventually broke through midway through the second quarter to take a 1-0 lead, but Worcester's energy and push forward never waned.
In the second half, both teams fought for control, with Springfield doubling its lead just four minutes into the third. The Pride added a third goal late in the frame, but Worcester responded quickly. Off a perfectly executed penalty corner, sophomore Kylie Casey (Hubbardston, MA) buried a shot following a slip pass from senior Maggie Naylor (Dartmouth, MA), putting the Lancers on the board.
Springfield found a late surge in the final minutes, tacking on two more goals to secure the 5-1 result.
In goal, sophomore Lizzy MacDonald (Medford, MA) was a defensive anchor, finishing with 16 saves to reach double digits for the second time this season.
