Morin's Hat Trick Sends Lancers Sailing Past Viking in Conference Victory

Worcester, MA- The Worcester State Field Hockey team (3-8, 2-2) is back in action as they start their end of season campaign for a top spot in the conference. Aiming to push them over the .500 mark in conference action today is an afternoon meeting with the Salem State Vikings, who the Lancers defeated in MASCAC semifinals last year on their way to the Championship.

How it Happened:

A lovely breezy noon Saturday match between the Lancers and the Vikings would start off the Saturday action on Coughlin Field with senior goalkeeper, Madison Ferrara (Somerset,MA), settling in for a quiet day net as she would be called to do minimal physical work and focus more on the vocal leadership. About halfway through the first, senior Natalya Morin (Barre, MA) would break the tie putting the Blue and Gold up 1-0 after grabbing a rebound off the keeper's pad. Worcester's powerful offense led the first period with a rifling of eight shots. 

The second period started with a rally of corners inserted by junior midfielder Kaelin Coleman (Attleboro, MA) looking to add to the score against the Vikings. Late in the second period, junior Allison Keenan (Marlborough, MA)  would put her team up 2-0, again off of a rebound from a flurry of activity in front of the Viking goalie, closely followed by Morin's second goal of the day assisted by junior Charlotte MacGregor ( Bellingham, MA) who corralled a pass into the circle, and dished the pass over to Morin to end out the half. 

After a brief halftime break, Worcester continued to dominate with eleven corners while the Vikings kept them to only two shots in the third. Coleman notched her first on the game assisted by junior Maggie Nailor (Dartmouth, MA) to make the score 4-0. Ferrara finished the third period still facing no shots in the match from Salem.

In the final period of the game, sophomore goalkeeper Jordyn Bolduc (Auburn, MA) would start in the net for the Lancers. Coleman, not finished scoring, hot off a corner scored her second of the game assisted by freshman Kate Harrison (Chelmsford, MA). The Lancers, not looking to stop there, Morin on a hot streak finished the scoring off with a third goal finishing her first hat trick and the sealing the Lancers at 6-0. Bolduc made two saves in the final quarter, and Worcester finished with a roaring 22 shots and 29 corners on the game. 

What's Next:

Worcester State (4-8, 3-2) will take little time to break as they begin their second meeting of conference opponents on Tuesday when Westfield State journey's to Worcester. The game will be highlighted by the support of the Rosen Cancer Awareness Fund's Pink Out Game in conjunction with the team's Lancer Game to promote the involvement of and connection of all Worcester State student-athletes.
