WORCESTER, Mass. - The Worcester State University field hockey team suffered its first regulation loss of the 2019 season on Monday afternoon, falling to Connecticut College by a final score of 4-1 in non-conference action at Coughlin Field.
With the defeat, Worcester State falls to 6-2 overall on the season, while the Camels improve to 2-4.
Connecticut College got on the board early on to take a quick lead, as freshman Abby Marchand put home her second goal of the season off a feed from sophomore Meghan Gazard, The score would remain 1-0 Camels throughout the rest of the first half.
The Camels doubled their lead in the first minute of the second half, as Marchand put home her second goal of the contest. Worcester State had a quick answer however, as junior Coley Hayes (Norwood, Mass.) popped home her fourth goal of the season to cut the deficit to 2-1. Classmate Sarah Duff (Warren, Mass.) was credited with an assist on the goal.
Worcester State was unable to knot up the score however, as Gazard would score midway through the third quarter to bring the Camel advantage back to two. Marchand completed her hat trick for some insurance with 3:13 remaining in the fourth quarter to give the game its final score of 4-1.
Junior goalkeeper Meghan Murphy was a wall in net for the Camels, turning aside 12 Lancer shots to get her first win of the season. Jess Hopkins (Chelmsford, Mass.) took the loss for Worcester State, making five saves.
Worcester State will return to action on Wednesday for a 4:30 contest on the road at Bridgewater State.
