WORCESTER, Mass. - Senior Rachel Hopkins (Chelmsford, Mass.) recorded three goals and tallied an assist to lift the Worcester State University field hockey team to a 4-1 win over Wellesley College Thursday night in non-conference action at John F. Coughlin Memorial Field.
With the win, Worcester State stays perfect with a record of 3-0. Wellesley sees its record fall to 1-2 with the defeat.
Hopkins opened the scoring just 5:52 into the contest as she took a feed from Cassidy Windler (Holden, Mass.), danced around a defender, and fired one into the net to give the Lancers a 1-0 lead.
Just two minutes later, senior Olivia Antonelli (Westford, Mass.) redirected a Hopkins shot into the net for her second goal of the season, extending the Lancers lead to 2-0.
The score remained 2-0 into the fourth quarter, when Blue senior Hannah Maisano (Gambrills, Md.) made things interesting by batting home a shot on the goal line to cut into the Lancer lead to 2-1. The one-goal margin only lasted 58 seconds however, as Hopkins fired home a rocket on a breakaway to extend the Lancer lead back to 3-1.
Hopkins completed the hat trick with 1:11 remaining in the contest, solidified Worcester State's victory. Junior Sarah Duff (Warren, Mass.) picked up an assist on the goal.
Sophomore goalkeeper Jess Hopkins (Chelmsford, Mass.) picked up her third win of the season with a three-save effort. Janelle Sullivan (Philadelphia, Pa.) made seven saves for Wellesley, but came up on the short end in the defeat.
Worcester State will be back in action on Saturday with a road trip to Mount Holyoke. Wellesley will be off until next Tuesday when they head to Bridgewater State.
