Worcester, MA- After a stretch of home games the Worcester State Football team (1-4, 1-3) is back on the road this evening as they journey to Dartmouth to face off with the University of Massachusetts Corsairs.
Final
Worcester State: 7
UMass- Dartmouth: 32
How it Happened:
The opening quarter of action for the Lancers would see three long punts for sophomore Louie Freitas (Dartmouth, MA), a 54, 45 yarder and 30 yarder as Worcester worked to find the correct gear for their offense. In the Corsairs opening possession they would work their way 80 yards down the field for an opening touchdown, followed up with an ensuing possession that would put UMass-Dartmouth up 13-0 after a missed extra point attempt.
UMass-Dartmouth would claim the leading possession into the second quarter but Worcester's defense was up to the challenge forcing a three and out. The game would continue to go back and forth with Worcester gaining even further defensive momentum turned offensive when junior Griffin Metcalf (Leicester, MA) picked off a pass from the Corsairs QB on the UMass 29. Three plays later would find junior Jermaine Norfleet (Agawam, MA) powering it down the middle of the line for a two yard touchdown carry, which topped off by a Freitas extra point, would settle the score at 7-13. Worcester's senior Damian Mitchell (Lancaster, PA) would secure a second interception for the Lancers in the quarter but offensively they were unable to convert allowing UMass-Dartmouth to regain possession and find the enzone for a 19-7 lead after a second missed extra point. A fumble on the kickoff would find the Corsairs with another chance before half which Worcester worked to stifle successfully, recording a fumble recovery by senior Nathan Winco (Sturbridge, MA).
UMass-Dartmouth would receive the kickoff to start the second half and expand their lead with an additional six points on the board, as the Lancers defense shut down the two point conversion. The defenses for both squads would tighten up, but in the waning minutes of the third the Corsairs would record an additional seven points for the 32-7 lead.
The final quarter of action would see Worcester continue to push down the field while working to limit the effectiveness of the Corsairs. The tactic would lay off for the Lancers as they shut down UMass-Dartmouth in the fourth but were equally unable to find the end zone falling to the Corsairs 32-7.
Defensively, senior Aaron Becker (Natick, MA) would lead the Lancers with 12 tackles while junior Will Vogel (Groton, MA) recorded a sack in the action. On the offensive side junior Lance Williams (Westerly, RI) would record seven receptions for 51 yards.
