Final
Worcester State: 5
Mass. Maritime: 7
How it Happened:
A defensive battle ensued in the opening innings of today's game as junior Gavin Price (Worcester, MA) led the defensive field in the action. Price forced ground outs and strikeouts to keep the Buccaneers off the scoreboard. While Mass. Maritime would do the same in the first two innings, the Lancers managed to connect for one big connection after junior Kevin Doyle (Bridgewater, MA) was walked and sophomore Riggs Catlin (Dedham, MA) sent the ball out of the park over the left field fence to grab a 2-0 lead in their brief spurt of contact in the game. The bottom of the third found the Buccaneers stealing one run back to continue this back and forth battle.
The top of the fifth would again find Worcester going long and Doyle crossing home plate, this time with a one run homer to center field.
The game remained in the 3-1 scorelock until Doyle again went deep, this time to right field that brought in Junior Ryan Jewett (Natick, MA) for the 5-1 lead into the bottom of the inning.
The bottom of the 8th led to an additional run for Mass. Maritime would get one single run before a three run homer would tie the game at 5-5 before a double would force across two additional runs. Worcester would fight to regain the lead in the fifth but the Buccaneers were completely focused, shutting down the Lancer attack to claim the 5-7 victory.
