Final
Worcester State: 16
Framingham State: 8
How it Happened:
While it was a quiet first for both teams in their single game meeting in the first, the second inning was a completely different situation. Junior Tad Giardina (Reading, MA) would find the RBI walk as junior Derek De La Cruz (Providence, RI) senior Nathan Thurber (Framingham, MA) and junior Alan Carpenter (Richmond, RI) would move the bases, with Carpenter scoring the opening run. A further walk on sophomore Anthony Burgess ( Tewksbury, MA) would score Thurber as senior Mason Bates (Shrewsbury, MA) singled to left field as De La Cruz recorded run number three. Sophomore Riggs Catlin (Dedham, MA) had a sacrifice fly to right field for Giardina, who started the inning's RBI game for run four. It then became a base running game as Bates looked to steal second and capitalized on an error from the catcher to reach third while Burgess continued home for run five. The final run came as junior Ryan Jewett (Natick, MA) went for the deep sacrifice to bring in Bates as Worcester took the 6-0 lead early.
The Rams would get a single run back in the bottom of the third and tack on three more in the third. The fifth inning would find success for Worcester as Catlin would get the action started with a single to second, followed by a Jewett single to left field. The runners were all advanced by junior Tyler Normandie (Lowell, MA) and the bases were then loaded as Carpenter was hit by a pitch. A further walk on Thurber would bring in run seven while a sacrifice fly from De La Cruz would send across Normandie for number eight. Giardina would send a line drive to left field for Carpenter to score run nine and would wrap up the scoring fifth with a Burgess hit to left field that resulted in an error and Thurber run for the 10-4 lead. Evan Samsel made fast work of the Rams in the bottom of the inning to hold onto the six run lead.
Catlin would lead off the second with a walk and Normandie Home two batters later would provide a further two runs for a 12-4 lead. Carpenter would then hit a grounder to second that was bobbled to allow for a new runner on base. De La Cruz would single to right field while a Giardina fielder's choice would allow Carpenter to score. A further single from Burgess would put Worcester up by 10 as Thurber recorded run 14 for the Lancers.
Framingham State would respond with a single run in the bottom of the sixth as Worcester looked to again push out their lead in the seventh, where they recorded a single run from Jewett on a wild pitch. The bottom of the seventh would find the Rams tack on two additional runs as the score sat at 15-7.
It would be a quiet eighth as each team looked to close things out in the final inning of action. The Lancers tacked on a 16th run off a Carpenter sacrifice that allowed Jewett to cross. Framingham would grab one more run in the bottom for a 16-8 final for the Lancers.
