Salem State: 9
How it Happened:
The Vikings would get the action started early in the single game action as they recorded two runs off sophomore Matt Direnzo (Leicester, MA) in the first but would be kept scoreless until they tacked on a third run in the fourth. Worcester would open up their scoring in the back half of the game as they connected with bunt and two doubles to cut the lead to a single run. Senior Mason Bates (Shrewsbury, MA) would get a bunt single with junior Ryan Jewett (Natick, MA) would lay down the sac bunt to advance Bates to second. Sophomore Riggs Catlin (Dedham, MA) would go deep to center field for a double and send Bates across for run one. Junior Tyler Normandie (Lowell, MA) would duplicate the play two batters later to bring in Catlin for the 3-2 lead to close out the fifth.
Worcester would threaten in the bottom of the sixth placing runners on the corners but the Vikings were able to force the ground out to end the danger and maintain the one run lead. The top of the seventh though found the Vikings putting in some breathing room as they added in five further runs to expand their lead to 8-2. With a comfortable lead, the Lancers would fall quietly in the bottom of the 7th unable to dig in further.
Salem would add one run in the top of the eight which the Lancers would work to counter at the bottom of the inning but the Viking defense managed to keep any chances at bay. No further scoring was recorded in the top of the ninth as Worcester looked for a comeback in the bottom as they put Bates on early for a runner on base but they were unable to put together the plays needed to sink Salem.
