Worcester, MA- With a late week rain storm playing games with the schedule the Worcester State Baseball team (7-8,5-0) returned to conference action today to take on the Salem State Vikings in double header action.
Final
Worcester State: 0
Salem State: 4
How it Happened:
It would be an intense pitching duel in game one action for the Lancers as both teams remained scoreless through two innings before the Vikings managed to piece together some plays and contact off junior Gavin Price (Worcester, MA) and the Lancer defense to come away with one in the bottom of the third. The bottom of the fifth would find the Vikings tack on three additional runs for the 4-0 lead. Worcester would work to put some runs on the board but were unable to send the base runners home, falling in the opening game action 4-0.
Final
Worcester State: 8
Salem State: 4
How it Happened:
Game two was a complete flip of game one as Worcester jumped out early in the first inning as sophomore Riggs Catlin (Dedham, MA) would single to start the game. Junior Tyler Normandie (Lowell, MA) partnered with a junior Ryan Jewett (Natick, MA) walk and senior Nathan Thurber (Framingham, MA) hit by pitch would bring in Catlin for run one. Junior Alan Carpenter (Richmond, RI) sac fly would send across Jewett while junior Cameron Early (Worcester, MA) would single home Thurber for the 3-0 lead.
Worcester would hit x2 in the top of the second inning as first year Derek De La Cruz (Providence, RI) would hit a hard single to right before an error on a Catlin bunt would find two runners on base. The Vikings would elect to intentionally walk Thurber to load the bases hoping for the easy out, but luck would not go with Salem as a Normandie double would clear the bases for the 6-0 lead.
The third inning would find further loaded bases, this time a Thurber walk would only bring in De La Cruz for the 7-0 lead before the inning closed.
The bottom of the fourth found the Vikings grabbing two runs back before the fifth found sophomore Isaiah Weston (Essex, MA) stealing home while Jewett looked to claim second for the 8-2 lead.
The Vikings would look for the late comeback in the bottom of the seventh with two outs and managed to come away with two runs to cut the lead in half but would be unable to take down the Lancers as they won 8-4 in game two.
Sophomore Jack Hildred (Bellingham, MA) would go for the complete game, claiming six strikeouts in the win.
What's Next:
Lancer Baseball (8-9, 6-1) remains in double form next Tuesday with a trip to Fitchburg State to take on the Falcons with a 2pm start.
