Worcester State: 12
Bethel: 3
How it Happened:
It would be a pitching duel to get this nine inning meeting with Bethel started as each team went scoreless through the first four innings of action. Worcester would strike the iron hot in the fifth, capitalizing on a number of errors by the Royals. Sophomore Riggs Catlin (Dedham, MA) would see the first pay off as he found base off an error from the shortstop which sent junior Jeremy DeLacruz (Lowell, MA) in for the opening run. Junior Alan Carpenter (Richmond, RI) singled to left field as junior Kevin Doyle (Bridgewater, MA) would record run number two. Junior Tyler Normandie (Lowell, MA) was the next beneficiary of some errors, as one caused by the second baseman found Catlin rounding the bases. Junior Cameron Early (Worcester, MA) sent up a sacrifice to send Carpenter home while junior Tad Giardina (Reading, MA) would hit a double to send across senior Nathan Thurber (Framingham, MA) and Normandie to take the 6-0 lead.
The Royals would claim back three runs in the top of the sixth but Worcester would find a seventh in the bottom of the inning as Doyle scored off another error for the 7-3 lead. The bottom of the eighth would add additional runs by Catlin and Carpenter to push the Worcester lead to 9-3 while Early would sacrifice yet again to push Normandie across for run number 10. Worcester would load up the bases off walks and hit by pitches which would find Thurber walking across home for run number 11 while an error on the Bethel third baseman found Giardina racing across for number 12 before the inning was closed.
Junior Gavin Price would claim the start on the mound, going for 3.2 innings with no runs allowed in the win while senior Nolan Turner would come away with a credited win on the night, going 4.1 innings. Price and Turner each claimed four strikeouts in the action.
