WORCESTER, Mass – The visiting Bridgewater State Bears handed the Worcester State baseball team an 8-2 defeat on Saturday afternoon at Lyons Diamond, securing a sweep of the three-game Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) series.
The Lancers fall to 17-15 overall and 11-7 in the conference, while Bridgewater tightens their hold on the conference's top seed with a 16-2 MASCAC record (26-11 overall).
The Bears wasted no time, jumping out to a 3-0 lead after one and a 5-0 lead after two innings.
Joe Frechette (Plymouth, Mass.) had two hits and three runs batted in for Bridgewater, and he got the scoring started with a single up the middle with two on in the first. Joey Molis (Cumberland, R.I.) followed with a double to right center to plate two more.
Frechette singled through the left side with two out in the second to chase home another two runs for the Bears.
The Lancers found their stroke in the bottom of the fifth, as back to back doubles by Chris Ausiello (Tyngsboro, Mass.) and Thomas DiBattista (Hudson, Mass.) got them back in the game at 5-2.
It stayed that way until the seventh inning, a frame in which the Bears scored three runs without the benefit of a base hit. They took six walks in the inning, three of them with the bases loaded.
DiBattista was 2-5, the only Lancer player with multiple hits, though Tom Halliwell (Leominster, Mass.) did take three walks and Grant Hartley (Auburn, Maine) was on base twice via free pass as well.
Cole Glassburn (Hopkinton, Mass.) falls to 2-4 after allowing five runs over five innings.
Matthew Seavey (N. Attleboro, Mass.) earned the victory for the Bears, improving to 5-2. Seavey allowed two earned runs on three hits while walking five himself.
The Lancers are slated to play two non-conference games this week, hosting MIT on May 3rd and travelling to Curry the next day.
Bridgewater begins their final MASCAC series of the regular season next Friday when they head to Westfield State.
