Big Fourth Inning Propels Baseball to Seventh Straight Victory
Playing in its first game this season outside the state of Florida, the Worcester State University baseball team stayed red hot on Wednesday afternoon with a 7-2 win over Anna Maria College in non-conference action at the New England Baseball Complex.
NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. - Playing in its first game this season outside the state of Florida, the Worcester State University baseball team stayed red hot on Wednesday afternoon with a 7-2 win over Anna Maria College in non-conference action at the New England Baseball Complex.
With the win, Worcester State's winning streak runs to seven games, and the Lancers improve to 7-2 on the season. It is the longest Lancers winning streak since the team won eight in a row from in April 2011. The AMCats drop to 7-8 on the season.
Anna Maria jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning. Kosta Drosidis and Jason Shell grabbed the RBIs for the AMCats to put their team out in front.
The Lancers still trailed 2-0 in the top of the fourth when senior Sam Allen (Springfield, Mass.) not only put Worcester State on the board but into the lead with a three-run home run over the left field fence for his second long ball of the season. Later in the inning, Worcester State extended its lead to 5-2 when senior Michael Ferrara (Easton, Mass.) plated a pair on a triple to deep right center.
Junior Kevin Larkin (Rocky Hill, Conn.) recorded an RBI single in the sixth and senior Seth Leslie (Phillipston, Mass.) an RBI sacrifice fly in the eighth to provide some insurance, but Worcester State had all the offense it would need. After a two-run, two-hit first inning, junior starter PJ Walsh (Bridgewater, Mass.) would allow just one more hit over his next four innings, picking up his second win of the season on the hill. The bullpen was also stellar on the afternoon for the Lancers, as sophomores Kyle Gray (Braintree, Mass.), Issiac Christiansen (Franklin, Maine), and Chris Elliott (Plymouth, Mass.) combined to allow just two hits and no runs in four innings to help preserve the victory.
Ferrara led all players on the afternoon with three hits, while also swiping three bases, driving in a pair, and scoring one run. Allen and junior Kenan Kolanda (Sterling, Mass.) each recorded a pair of hits for Worcester State in the winning effort.
Worcester State will look to remain in the win column on Saturday when the Lancers host Becker at the New England Baseball Complex. First pitch from Northborough is slated for 11 a.m.
