Strong Seventh Inning Pushes Southern Maine Past Worcester State, 13-3

Southern Maine came right off the bat in the 1st inning when they scored two runs on hits from Matt Bender (Walpole, Mass.), Kip Richard (Kennebunk, Maine) and Sam Stauble (Harrison, Maine).
The Huskies added another in the top of the 3rd before the Lancers were able to break Dalton Rice's (Waterford, Maine) no-hitter in the bottom of the 4th when Kevin Larkin (Bristol, Conn.) hit a single and Ben Palatino (Hudson, Mass.) scored stealing home following a strikeout.
Southern Maine added one more run in the top of the 5th, and the Lancers scored another run in the bottom of the 6th on an RBI single from Larkin to advance the score to 4-2 going into the 7th inning.
The 7th inning sealed the deal for the Huskies as they scored seven runs on six hits against Worcester State's pitcher, PJ Walsh (Bridgewater, Mass.). They added two more in the top of the 8th to put their total run at 13.
Worcester State was able to score one more in the bottom of the 9th when Jake Ryan (Northbridge, Mass.) hit a shot over Southern Maine's centerfielder's head, resulting in an RBI triple to send Keith Dombroski (Sutton, Mass.) home for the Lancers' third and final run of the game.
Southern Maine's Rice earned the win on the mound as he pitched 6.1 innings and only allowed three hits and struck out seven Worcester State batters. Worcester State's starter, Tyler Barrie (Oxford, Mass.) allowed four runs (one unearned) and received the loss in a 6-inning performance. Walsh came in to relieve in the 7th and gave up seven runs on four hits and two walks. Andrew Reed (Douglas, Mass.) and Matt Irzyk (Westfield, Mass.) closed out the game for Worcester State, allotting a combined two runs on six hits.
Eight Southern Maine players batted .500 or above on the occasion. Worcester State's five hits came from Ryan (2), Larkin (2) and Dombroski (1).
The Lancers will wrap up their Florida spring play tomorrow (Mar. 25) when they face St. Joseph's (Me.) at 2 p.m.
