Baseball Drops 16-3 Decision To UMass Dartmouth

Auburn, MA --- UMass Dartmouth sophomore George Aggostini (Dighton, MA) was 3-for-5 with four RBIs and senior John Quigg (Weymouth, MA) tossed eight strong innings as both helped lead the Corsairs to a 16-3 victory over Worcester State in non-conference baseball action at Lemansky Park.

For UMD, senior Tyler White (Westport, MA) was 2-for-3 with three runs scored while second-year Nate Farias (Fall River, MA) made a trio of trips to home plate.

Worcester State's lone multi-hitter was sophomore Nicholas Gikas (Danvers, MA) who finished 3-for-4 with an RBI.

UMass Dartmouth (5-9) started off the contest by going up 3-0 in the top of the second inning. Sophomore Alex Newton (Saco, ME) led off the frame with a walk and then he came around to score on a dropped fly ball by the right fielder.

The miscue allowed the inning to continue as White and freshman Tyler Cacciola (W. Greenwich, RI) both plated runs.

The visitors scored four more times in the top of the fourth as the Corsiars were highlighted by a two-run single by Aggostini.

In the fifth, UMass Dartmouth put the game out of reach when they batted around and put eight runs on the board. The frame was underscored by a pair of two-run doubles by sophomore Ryan Medeiros (Acushnet, MA) and Aggostini.

After the Corsairs scored one more time in the seventh to make the score 16-0 on a Farias RBI ground-out, the Lancers finally broke the shutout with a three-run ninth.

Junior Dan Ubele (Tynsboro, MA) roped his second triple of the season and then classmate Joe Carlier (Rockland, MA) drove him in. Gikas and third-year JD Salinas (Fredericksburg, TX) followed with plated runs in the inning.  

Quigg (1-0) hurled eight frames of four-hit baseball before he ran into trouble in the ninth. Quigg, in his first start of the 2013 campaign for UMD, gave up three earned runs to go with seven hits, one walk and eight strikeouts on just 92 pitches.  

Sophomore Ben Libuda (Auburn, MA) was tagged with the setback. Libuda yielded seven runs (one earned) on seven hits while he also added two walks and three punch outs. Junior Jared Kuzio (Franklin, MA) was solid in relief as he gave up an earned run and rung up four batters in four hitless frames of work.

Medeiros and freshman Connor Shaw (Goffston, NH) ended the day with two swipes each as the Corsairs out-hit their opponents, 12-8.

Both squads host conference opponents on Saturday afternoon. Worcester State hosts MCLA in a MASCAC twinbill at 1 o'clock at Auburn High while the Corsairs take on Keene State in a doubleheader that is slated for a 12 PM first-pitch.
