After hitting .473 as a senior at Worcester State University, the second-highest average nationally in Division 3, Hudson's Corey McDonald became just the fourth All-American in program history with his honorable-mention selection by D3baseball.com.
The 5-foot-11, 220-pound McDonald also compiled an on-base percentage of .550 (seventh nationally) and a slugging percentage of .698 in earning the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference's Player of the Year award, and a third-team All-New England selection. A three-sport athlete at Hudson High, McDonald demonstrated his versatility at Worcester State, where he played 20 games at shortstop, 14 at third, and two in left field.
This summer, he is playing for the Shrewsbury Dirt Dogs of the Central New England Baseball Association. He is hoping for a tryout with a big-league team or perhaps an invitation from the independent Can-Am League.
"The All-American honor was awesome and this season was a blast,'' said McDonald, who played for two seasons at Community College of Rhode Island before transferring to Worcester State. He also coaches an AAU team of 15-year-olds in Clinton, and would like to continue coaching.
Last year, as the conference's postseason MVP, McDonald drove in three game-winning runs to propel the Lancers to the tournament title.
"Corey's an aggressive hitter who isn't up there to walk,'' said Worcester State head coach Dirk Baker. "He had a pretty amazing two seasons here.''
