Intramural Dodgeball Rules

All participants must present their One card before participating in an event. 

Once play begins the basketball court sidelines will also serve as the dodgeball boundary lines. The court extends from wall to wall between these lines. Any player leaving the boundary lines will be ruled out. Players will be allowed to leave the sidelines to retrieve a loose ball. 

The game will be played with 6 people per team on the court, you must have a minimum of 5 players to begin and continue a game.

• If you have more than 6 players on your team, players who do not start on the court may join in the rotation to go back into play on a caught ball.

Playing Time:

A complete match will be considered the best 3 out of 5 games. Each game will have a 5 minute time limit to complete the game.

Game Rules

Set up:

 To begin the game 6 dodgeballs will be lined up at center court – 3 balls on each side of center. Each team will start behind the end line of the basketball court (red line). Each team has rights to go after the three balls to the right of center. An employee will give the signal to start the game.

How to Win:

The winner of the game is the first team to knock out all of the players on the other side. If time expires with players still remaining on both sides, the team with the most players remaining will be declared the winner. If this is also a tie, the game will be declared a tie. 

Rules:

There are 4 ways a player can be ruled out:

1)      If a player is hit by a dodgeball thrown by the opposing team. A player within the 10-foot line (white line) may not throw at an opposing player also within the 10-foot line. Should this occur, the thrower will be ruled out.

2)      If a thrown ball is caught the thrower is ruled out. When this happens, a person on the team that caught the ball is allowed back in the game. If the ball is not caught initially, the catcher must do so before the ball touches the wall, the ground or someone else. Otherwise, the (attempted) catcher is out. The return of players must go in order, so on the first caught ball the person who was first out must come back in.

3)      If someone is hit and a TEAMMATE catches the ball, the person who was hit is out and the catch is awarded.

4)      If a person tries to dodge a ball by blocking it with a ball already in their possession, and the blocker drops the ball or losses possession of the ball the blocker is out. Also, should the ball that was blocked hit the blocker, the blocker shall be ruled out.

There is a 5-second violation if the leading team has all balls on their side and does not throw at least one ball within 5 seconds. A leading team is considered to be the team with the most players. If a 5-second violation occurs, all balls are to be rolled over to the other team, and one player is dropped. The ball in this circumstance must be underhand roll or a shot to the basket.

Additionally, once a player picks up a ball, they have 10 seconds to throw the ball across the center line and the opponents ‘volleyball line.’ The 10 seconds starts once the ball is picked up, and if at any time the ball is given to another teammate, the original 10 second count down is still valid.

Players may not cross the divider line.

The ball must be thrown or rolled if one team is in possession of all of the balls within 5 seconds, you may not place it on the other side of the divider line.
