Worcester State Places 4th in Spring Fling

DARTMOUTH – Johnson & Wales edged Bridgewater State to take home the top prize in the 3rd annual Corsair Spring Fling women's tennis round-robin played at the UMD Tennis Courts. J&W, champions of the Great Northeast Conference, finished with 21 points, while the Bears, champions of the Little East Conference, had 17 points. Both teams have qualified for the NCAA Division III Tournament next month.


Host University of Massachusetts Dartmouth placed third with 9 points, followed by Worcester State, with 6 points. Both the Corsairs and Lancers played without their top singles and doubles players, due to illness and injury.


In Round One, Bridgewater defeated Worcester, 6-2, while J&W topped the Corsairs, 8-1. Freshman Jaime Fastino (Rehoboth, Mass.) was the lone winner for UMD, topping the Wildcats' Luiza Silva Simoes (Cuiaba, Brazil) 6-2 at No. 2 singles.


The Corsairs fared better in Round Two, edging the Lancers, 5-4. Winners in singles for UMD were juniors Mollie McCaffrey (Taunton, Mass.) 6-3 at No. 2, Samantha Rollings (Tiverton, R.I.) 6-0 at No. 3, Molina Oung (Bourne, Mass.) 6-1 at No. 5 and freshman Melanie Wong (Somerset, Mass.) 6-2 at No. 6. Sophomore Amelia Ralowicz (Lowell, Mass.) and Oung earned the Corsairs lone doubles point, 6-2, at No. 3. Bridgewater and Johnson & Wales split their six singles sets, but the Bears won two of their three doubles sets for a 5-4 decision and to move within one point of the Wildcats heading into the final round.


Johnson & Wales topped Worcester State, 9-0, in Round Three, and clinched first place overall. Bridgewater State edged UMass Dartmouth, 6-3, and finished four points behind the Wildcats. For the Corsairs, Ralowicz and Oung won 6-5 at No. 3 doubles, Oung was a 6-4 winner at No. 5 singles and Wong won 6-0 at No. 6 singles.


A total of 54 no-ad sets were played during the round-robin format, with each team playing 18 singles and 9 doubles sets.
