PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Plymouth State University won five of six singles matches and two of three doubles encounters Saturday (Sep. 10) afternoon to defeat Worcester State University, 7-2, in a Little East Conference (LEC) women's tennis match at the Holderness School Courts.

With the win, Plymouth State earns their first LEC victory as they improve to 2-2 on the season, and 1-1 in the conference. Worcester State saw their first conference game against the Panthers, and dropped to 1-1 on the season, and 0-1 in the conference.

"It was a tough team loss against tough competition," commented head coach Courteney Blais. "We couldn't quite capitalize on the important shots today."

Senior Zara Jakubas (Califon, N.J.) and junior Sunny Jakubas (Califon, N.J.) made their first appearances of the season for Plymouth State, and each captured two matches. They teamed up for an 8-3 triumph at No. 1 doubles, and then Zara won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles and Sunny won 7-6, 6-3 at No. 2 singles.

Other single winners for Plymouth State included junior Megan Wallace (Moultonborough, N.H.) at No. 4, sophomore Kelley Corson (Exeter, N.H.) at No. 5, and senior Rachel Gustafson (Belchertown, Mass.) at No. 6.

Plymouth State also got a win at No. 3 doubles from sophomore Megan Wheeler (Manchester, N.H./Central) and freshman Alex Dunn (Jaffrey, N.H.)

Worcester State sophomore Nathalie Khafaga (Auburn, Mass.) and freshman Lauren Taylor (Attleboro, Mass.) won the No. 2 doubles match in a tiebreaker, 9-8 (10-8). "The two fought very hard for their tie breaker," said Blais.

The Lancers' lone winner in singles was junior Alexis Silk (Greenfield, Mass.) at No. 3. "Alexis had a standout match today, and controlled the court confidently," stated Blais.

This upcoming week, the Lancers will see three tennis matches, two of which are on their home courts. On Tuesday (Sep. 13) Worcester State travels to MCLA, from where on Friday (Sep. 16) and Saturday (Sep. 17) they host Roger Williams and UMass Boston.
