MIT Snaps Lancers’ Five-Game Winning Streak

WORCESTER, Mass. – The MIT Engineers snapped the Worcester State men's soccer team's five game winning streak as they edged the Lancers 2-1 in a Wednesday evening matchup at John F. Coughlin Memorial Field.

The first half saw a 1-1 tie score as MIT held the advantage in shots and corner kicks, 9-7 and 3-1, respectively. MIT's Ryan Stuntz (Wellesley, Mass.) put the Engineers up on the board in the 13th minute following a corner kick from Wesley Woo (Palo Alto, Calif.). Woo's corner kick found the foot of Nate Johnson (Sudbury, Mass.) who then dished the ball to Stuntz for the first goal of the game.

Worcester State responded with a goal of their own in the 27th minute when freshman Justin Echeverry (Methuen, Mass.) rocketed the ball past MIT's starting goalkeeper, Travis Leathrum (Chesapeake, Va.), to knot the score at 1-1.

The second half seemed to be in Worcester State's possession for the most part as the Lancers outshot the Engineers 11-4 and held a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks. Despite the Lancers' dominance on the offensive end, they were unable to place the ball in the net. The visiting Engineers, however, manufactured what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 77th minute when Kareem Itani (Dallas, Texas) passed to an open Woo who sailed the ball past Worcester's netminder, Henri Guilmette (Franklin, Mass.) for the 2-1 gain.

MIT's Leathrum tallied two stops while relief goalkeeper, Jeremy Cowham (Quincy, Mass.) earned his second victory of the season in goal stopping three shots in 32:41 minutes played. The Lancers' Guilmette suffered his fourth loss of the season in a four-save performance.

The Lancers wrap up their regular season with a home game against MASCAC opponent, Bridgewater State, on Saturday (Oct. 29) at 8 p.m. MIT also concludes their regular season on the same date as they travel back to Worcester for a NEWMAC game at WPI scheduled for 7 p.m.
